Hello- we will be driving from Val Gardena in Italy to Lake Como, and the route we are taking will take us through Switzerland. What do we need to know about driving through Switzerland? Do we need to have a pass/vignette if some sort? Thanks!
The Swiss vignette is for driving on the autobahns. At 40 CHF it is not cheap until you compare it to the cost of getting caught driving on a autobahn without one. So get a good map and check your your route carefully. In the mountains, there are sections of autobahns the are two lane roads so do pay attention to the road signs.
Keep in mind that while we (Switzerland) are part of the Schengen Agreement, we are not part of theEU customs union. You normally won't be checked, but if you are you need to show that you have complied with the customs rules and in particular yo are driving a rental car that has been approved for import/export from Switzerland - tell the rental company of your intensions when renting the car. The larger international car rental agencies will have no problem with this, the smaller ones not so much.
