Wifi

Hi all, which wifi connection is best to use in Switzerland? To rent a mobile wifi unit by companies like iSpot Connect or to buy an eSim?

You might consider going to the Technology section of the forum and read some
of the posts there, which will help you understand the concepts. Your question
is a bit mixed up.

First off, an eSim has nothing to do with wi-fi. It is an option to use a European
mobile carrier which may have advantages compared to using your US carrier
in Switzerland. iSpot Connect is a mobile hotspot. It is a separate device which
has a mobile radio in it, which takes a cellular signal (so you need some type of
service from a carrier) and provides a wi-fi signal. Your phone may be able to
provide the same function.

Second, the answer depends on things like what type of phone you have, your
budget, and your needs.

But in general, I would lean towards an eSim for most travel needs while in Europe.

Where do you need WIFI and for what purpose?

I live in Switzerland and I just rely on public WIFI. You'll find WIFI in:
- Train stations
- Many public busses
- Cafe and restaurants

- Migros shops (Very good high speed)
- Coop shops (Very good high speed)
- Hotels

Hi Jim, thank you for your reply. I am sure you are right, there are a lot of places with wifi. But I am working when travelling and need to be connected to the internet almost all the time. On the train from the airport up to Zermatt it is not enough to just connect to the internet when the train stops at the stations. When you are not living in Switzerland it is a bit hard to know where you can connect and not. But you helped me with some new places. Thank you very much!!

OK, with this somewhat added information, what is keeping you from
using your US provider's international coverage? You jumped right
to eSims and hotspots, but were a bit confused on the concepts, so
I am a bit reticent to add too much more information without knowing
more about your specific needs.

Such as, if you need connectivity for business needs, is it for email,
video/audio calls, etc? And if it is for business, doesn't your company
have an internal solution that everyone should use? The type of
access you need will have a bearing on what type of eSim you might
get/what service and quantity of data you might need.

And don't get me started on VPN's. If you are remotely accessing
corporate domains, you should have an internal VPN/secure access
method that they have in place.
