which trip to take?

If we only have time to do one out of these two trips, which would you do?
We will be in the area next weekend.

  1. Mt Schilthorn
  2. Jungfrau

I have so far, in three visits, only chosen Mt Schilthorn - cheaper, quicker, with a great 360-degree view at the top, and perhaps more forgiving if weather isn't ideal. But if you do that in the morning, you still have time to cross the valley in the afternoon, and some people make it all the way to Jungfraujoch. Check weather cams and forecasts before you set out for the day.

Thanks! How do you " cross the valley" to get to Jungfrau? Looking at the weather report as of today, it looks like Sunday will be one day of sunny weather. So, possibly we can try and do both that day?

I picked Schilthorn because the idea of being in tunnels for a long time was unappealing. Plus, we stayed in Muerren and it was easier ... and cheaper. Had a great trip (September) -- hope the weather works for you.

Ride the Schilthorn cable car all the way to the valley floor, then take the bus to Lauterbrunnen train station. From there you take the cog-wheel train up through Wengen to Kleine Scheidegg. Then you change to the Jungfraujochbahn to the top station. Its very pricey.

Where will you be staying? I vote for Schilthorn too. Jungfraujoch is a major engineering feat, but, its 1 1/2 hours in the dark each way. That's a lot of time invested in just getting there and back.

Don't believe the forecasts. Mountain weather is different to normal weather and most forecasters don't have mountain data. And it is fickle. If it is clear in the morning it may be very cloudy after lunch.

How do you come up with an hour and a half in the dark each way?

It takes 1:45 all the way from Lauterbrunnen to Jungfraujoch including the 10 minutes to change trains at Kleine Scheidegg. All the way to Kleine Scheidegg (except for a few tiny tunnels) is outside with fabulous views.

It is then 10 minutes from Kleine Scheidegg to the Eiger glacier stop, with the windows, and then 42 minutes to the top.

I don't see the 90 minutes previously mentioned.

I stay in Murren every year and trek to Jungfrau every year with students. It's not even CLOSE to 1 1/2 hours in a tunnel. Yes, the train ride is long but it's BEAUTIFUL scenery. Yes, there's about 10 or 15 minutes in the tunnel with 2 or 3 stops inside the tunnel for passengers to get out and look through the giant windows out to the stunning scenery.

But if you're in the area for such a short time and staying in Murren then I would definitely choose the Schilthorn, and visiting Piz Gloria and the James Bond memorabilia is a fun tourist thing to do.

I went to the Jungfrough on a clear day and that would be my choice,it was breathtaking,I liked it better than the Matterhorn.
