Which Travel Pass to Get for 8 Days

Hi! We are spending 8 days in Switzerland in May (first time!) and are now looking into train passes. Would purchasing the Half Fare be best for our itinerary? We are spending 10 days in Italy prior to this (Rome - Florence - Venice - Lake Garda - Tirano). Would the Eurail pass be better?

Day 1- take Bernina Express from Tirano to Chur (stay in Chur)
Day 2- take train to Lucerne (stay in Lucerne)
Day 3- Mt. Pilatus Golden Round Trip (do the passes cover this?)
Day 4- train to Interlaken (still deciding where to stay for these next few nights)
Day 5- Jungfraujoch OR Schilthorn (do the passes cover this?)
Day 6- Grindelwald
Day 7- Wengen/Gimmelwald/Mürren/Lauterbrunnen
Day 8- Zurich
Day 9- fly home

I want to book the Bernina Express asap so I'm just trying to figure out if we should purchase any travel passes. Thank you!

Price it out using the Saver Day Pass. These open six months out and you purchase for the day and you are able to travel freely during that day. This far out, you may be better off getting the saver day passes. Even purchasing the saver day pass, you are still paying the fee for the card on top of the half fare for each ticket.

Hi Milo, so should we purchase the Half Fare pass and then the Saver Day pass? We want to book our seats on the Bernina Express so thinking of buying the Half Fare today so we can reserve our seats today as well.

You don’t need to have the half fare card when you book. You’ll just need it to show on the train with your ticket.

Do select the half fare option though when booking.

Love the post, and this itinerary will allow you to see so many fantastic sites. Carrie is right about the Swiss Half Fare Card, and I made a small mistake when I purchased it two summers ago. We were in Italy and 3 days out from a 30-day stay in Switzerland. I got onto the Swiss Train app (SBB) and purchased the Swiss Half Fare card (good for 30 days), and I must have missed the "start date" drop-down menu. Result? The pass started on the purchase date while we were still in Italy for those last few days. Of course this means we did not use it for 3 days but the clock was ticking due to our (my) purchase mistake.

I didn't think anything of it until the last few days, when we also purchased an additional Bernese Oberland Pass with the Swiss Half Fare discount, and the Half Fare expired in the middle of the BO pass's validity. Of course, a train conductor checked our passes, and it turned out to be an issue. I tried to explain that it was a mistake during the purchase and the Swiss Half Fare Card should have started on the day of entry into Switzerland, but he wanted nothing to do with that conversation - ha.

Oh no! Thank you for the tip, we will definitely be extra cautious when purchasing the pass!
