Which train pass will save us?

Hi!

My family will visit Switzerland on April 30-May3. Though we will arrive late in the evening on April 30 in Lucerne. Our itinerary for now is :
May 1 - Gotthard panorama express then back to Lucerne
may 2- visit mt.titlis. Check out in our hotel off to Zurich then visit Rhine falls
may 3 - flight back home
questions:
1. Which travel pass will save us? STP or half fare card? Also what’s STP flex?
2. Do we need to get the family card? Travellers : me, husband and 10 month old baby
3. Which is more practical? Take the Gotthard panorama express from Lucerne or take train from Lucerne to Andermatt and catch glacier express? Then back to Lucerne ?
4. For May 2 itinerary is it doable? :)
I will appreciate all your suggestions
Thanks!

From where do you travel to Luzern? From a border or airport by rail using this pass? Or a ticket that's already purchased? I assume you're not getting dropped off in a car.

Glacier Express to where? You could go from Andermatt to Brig and then back through Spiez and Interlaken or Andermatt to Chur and back via Thalwil or Zurich. Either one of these longer routes would push you more toward considering a pass.

The STP Flex could covers three days spread out but a pass for 3 or 4 consecutive days sounds like a better fit, if getting a pass. Infants never need a ticket, pass, or Family Card. The Half-Fare Card for one month is a smaller investment giving discounts on tickets that you purchase as you go. https://www.ricksteves.com/travel-tips/transportation/trains/switzerland-rail-passes

- we're travelling from Paris via Train.

Glacier Express to where?
- from lucern to zermatt? or would it be more practical to just choose the gotthard panorama express. as the golden line won't be working on those dates.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the link :)

we will be arriving in Lucerne via Train from Paris. which is already purchased. I mean the ticket cost covers the transfer from basel to lucern.
Is the itinerary for May 2 doable?
Thanks!

OK, so we don't need to count anything on April 30.

The plan for May 2 sounds doable. The trip from Luzern to Kleintitlis takes 1.5 hours each way and I assume you'd want at least an hour at the top. Then, if you've left bags at the hotel instead of station storage, you'll have to walk back there, then train an hour to Zurich, drop bags again at either station or hotel, then another 1 hour each way to/from Neuhausen Rheinfall. This might be a good day to try out SBB's Express Luggage transfer service, instead of handling it yourself.

The part of the Golden Pass Line that's not running is not critical to your route; it's between Montreux and Zweisimmen. From Luzern to Zermatt on regular trains along the scenic route via Goeschenen and Andermatt takes 6 hours and 4 connections (for the 8:18 or 9:18 departures), not giving you time to actually go up the Matterhorn before completing the circle. The fastest route "home" via Bern takes 3.5 hours with 2 connections or via Spiez and Interlaken takes 4.25 hours and 3 connections.

With a baby, I think I'd keep it simple and choose the Gotthard Panorama Express.

Jessica, I would suggest the Half Fare card for CHF 120, it will give you half fare on all your trips, as well as the train to Engelberg (the bottom of Titlis), but not the cable cars up Titlis.
You don't say if you have any kids under 16, but with the ½ fare card they go free.
Details here: https://www.sbb.ch/en/leisure-holidays/travel-in-switzerland/international-guests/swiss-halffare-card.html
But don't trust me, you need to do the arithmetic yourself.

With hindsight, you could have saved even more by just buying a ticket from Paris to Basel (Swiss border), and a half price ticket from there to Luzern.

Hi Laura,

Actually I don’t count april 30 and May 3. :) as we will arrive around 10pm on April 30 and fly out of Zurich at 12noon. :(
Will check on express luggage transfer service. Is it okay to visit mt. Titlis with a baby? Coz we already travelled Oman to Philippines (v.v) when he was 6months. Though I understand plane altitude is different with mountains.
My first choice is to take the Glacier express, but upon checking it will be a circus catching it in Andermatt from lucern. Then I considered Golden Pass Line, but looking into the route we will be transferring 3 times if I’m not mistaken. Then someone suggested the Gotthard panorama and I think this is a better choice. :)
At first I’m thinking of doing Gotthard and Glacier (connection) but we will be back to lucern by midnight. And I don’t want to tire my baby for that.

Thanks!

Hi Chris F,

I’m really torn between STP and half fare card :(
Paris to Basel is a good point :)

Thanks

We don't know your baby very much. What does your Paediatrician say? 3238 Metres, or 10,623.36 feet altitude.
