Hi everyone. We are in need of some of your expert advice. June 2022 we will be using the train to travel around Switzerland for 4 days. On the 5th day we will take the train from Zurich to Milan to Civitavecchia for a cruise. Should we do the Global Pass or Swiss Pass with a separate ticket just for the Italy portion of the trip? This is only our 2nd trip to Europe and have had some train experience but very limited. What do you all think?
I would go with a Swiss Travel Pass 4 day or the Swiss Half Fare card. I have had a great experience using the former.
You do not need a pass for Italy just point to point tickets.
The Swiss Travel Pass is good from the closest train station before the border with Italy. So you could take the Bernina Express.
You'll be able to save a lot of money on the ticket from the border down to Civatecchia if you buy it early. But do check the rules on cancellation/change, because the cheapest tickets are usually non-refundable. You might reasonably decide, depending on the COVID situation early next year, that you'd rather pay more for a more flexible ticket.
Zurich to boarding the ship on the same day?
What time is check in?
I'm not convinced that you'll have time for any scenic trains.... how much luggage? Cruise size luggage?
We will actually be arriving in Civitavecchia a couple of days before the the cruise. We are building in some time for mishaps, should they happen. If they don't then we will explore the port region. We have already decided NOT to take the scenic train down to Italy. In reading Rick's book on Switzerland he says that having the pass, even between only two countries is worth it. Money isn't as much of an issue as convenience and travel comfort. Our pass or tickets for the train will be first class. Luggage will be two large, two carryon and two under seat size cases total. We appreciate the advice and comments we have received here. Thank you.
