Which Pass for Primarily Berner Oberland?

Hello and apologies...I know there are a lot of posts on here about this topic. But everyone has their own tweak or itinerary. I have been pouring over this for 2 days and don't feel any closer to an answer. We are 6 adults traveling from Switzerland into northern Italy. We arrive in Zurich super early in the morning and plan to hop on a train (+bus + gondola) to get to Gimmelwald on day 1.

While in the area we plan to see the Schilthorn and Jungfrau, (if not socked in with clouds). We plan to do some hiking and see Trummlebach falls. After 4 nights touring this area, we will take a train to Turin.

So which travel pass is best for our group? The Swiss Travel Pass? The Berner Oberland? A Half Price Swiss Pass in combo with Berner Oberland?

In an ideal world we would have passes that would allow us to jump on the first train out of Zurich airport without even having to stop at a ticket office or purchase on an app. (Swiss Pass $295 for 4 days). But I am not clear on what that gets us once we get up into the mountains in terms of hopping on gondolas and cable cars? The Berner Oberland Pass is $280 for 4 days. It seems like the sticking point is the Jungfrau train. The Swiss Pass gets you very little discount on that and I know it is spendy. But if we use our Swiss pass to get from Zurich to Gimmewald and again to get us into Italy on the day we leave - it seems like cost and convenience, the Swiss pass is the way to go? Any insight is welcome. It's like doing calculus!
(PS: I am aware the Swiss Pass does not cover scenic trains like the Glacier Pass and the Jungfrau train but there may be discounts) Please feel free to correct any above information - I have been on so many different sites I may have it jumbled.

I agree that it's all very confusing. Here's what we did -- when we arrived at the Zurich airport, we went to the SBB office in the terminal and talked with one of the very helpful people there. We explained what we planned to do and he advised us which pass to get. I can't remember what we ended up with, but we could hop on and off trains and cable cars and gondolas and buses and whatever else we needed. Note that we did not go to Schlithorn or Jungfrau.

The Swiss Travel Pass gets you all the way to Gimmelwald.
It gets you 50% off from Murren to the top of the Schilthorn,25% from Wengen up to the Jungfrau.
It covers the Glacier Express but you need to pay to reserve specific seat on the Glacier Express Website.
On your way to Italy try using the Bernina Express route from Chur to Tirano.
Here is the Area of Validity map

If you have trouble planning this out to echo the above just go to the SBB ticket office when you arrive in Zurich and buy your pass there.

I have been to Switzerland 4 times in the last 7 years and always buy the Swiss Travel Pass for the convenience.
It allows you free access to all museums in Switzerland and flexibility to go somewhere outside the Berner Oberland in case the weather is bad.

Thank you both very much. It sounds like the Swiss Travel Pass is the way to go. Jazz+Travels - the link to the map was so helpful. I doubt I will take the Bernia Express as it is not the way to Turin but I am definitely interested in it for a future trip. I am just super paranoid I am going to buy and expensive pass and find out it doesn't get us around on the various trains and lifts once we get to the Gimmelwald area and thus wasting the money. I do know the Jungfrau is its own ticket, but besides that - I just want a pass that allows full hop-on-hop-off access. So having you to bounce this off of was hugely helpful. Thanks again!

There is never going to be a pass that completely allows you to hop on and off everything with no ticket, it’s always just a trade off. Do you want to buy a few bigger tickets but less small ones while in Gimmelwald or vice versa. If you plan to do things like Mannlichen, Schynige Platte, Grindelwald First or any other mountain activities, those you’ll have to buy tickets with as well with the STP. STP gets you to inhabited areas (where people live) not tourist places. So you might want to price out what 2 saver day passes would be for your entrance from Zurich airport and your exit Italy along with the half fare card and reduced fare Jungfrau Travel Pass or BO pass. There is never an easy answer, but I wouldn’t get the STP just to avoid buying a ticket at the Zurich airport. They have machines everywhere, English speaking humans to help or just prebuy a saver day pass or ticket so that you’re not messing around with buying stuff at the airport. If the STP truly does make you buy the least amount of tickets, go for it, but I’m doubtful thats the case.
