Which hike: Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg OR Eiger trail from Eigergletscher to Alpiglen?

Good morning

If you had to choose between these 2 hikes, ***because you are short of time,* which one is the most spectacular option?

Hike from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg+ the “Royal Way” to the peak of Männlichen
6 kms 3h

Or

The Eiger trail from Eigergletscher to Alpiglen
7.25 kms 3 hours

As suggested I would love to do everything "Wengen / Mannlichen Royal Walk / Kleine Scheidegg / Fallbodensee / Eiger Express / wegneralp" but might not be able to :(

thanks a lot :)

I prefer Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg for more sweeping views. I don’t prefer the Eiger trail because you’re so close up to the mountains that I think the views aren’t as spectacular.

Just doing Mannlichen to KS takes maybe 2 hours to do leisurely with stops for photos and to enjoy the views. The detour up to the Royal Walk done leisurely, probably 45 minutes. The detour up to Fallbodensee from KS is 20 minutes up, 10 min down + time there. The walk from KS to Wengernalp is a little over a mile paved downhill and could be done in maybe 45 minutes.

If you have 3 hours, do Mannlichen to KS + Royal Walk. If you have 3-4 hours, add Fallbodensee. If you have a half day, add Wengernalp.

Thanks a lot. Always very helpful. Just trying to organize the 4 days based on the plan you gave me the other day

Day 1: rest day. Zermatt to Thun. Boat to interlken. Go to our hotel in Luaterbrunnen. Visit Wengen
Day 2 and 3: full days :)
Day 4: We have a flight the day after so I guess we would leave the area at maximum 5pm. I could wake up early that day and go hiking...

What do you think of this? :)

1 full day: Schynige Platte to First and Bachalpsee. Visit Grindelwald. https://www.earthtrekkers.com/hike-schynige-platte-to-faulhorn-to-first-switzerland/ Is that a must-see???

1 full day: LONG DAY :) Lauterbrunnen to Alpigen by transportation. The hike Alpiglen to Eigergletscher (Eiger trail). Then hike to Fallbodensee and Kleine Scheidegg and Mannlichen. Royal Walk. Back to Wengen. Visit Wengen. Back to Lauterbrunnen (will only miss Wegneralp) (Or the other way around which might be easier: Start at Mannlichen / Panorama trail / Eiger Trail / Alpigen)

I was thinking of hiking Murren to Shilthorn / Piz Gloria (FULL DAY) but am now thinking of going round trip by cable car to Shillthorn on day 4 to save time and be able to try your options the other days. It will be our last day... Might be risky to go on a long hike just before heading to the airport. :)

What do you think :)
Thanks again xx

I've done both and agree with wanderweg. I'd choose Manlichen - Kleine Scheidegg.

About your itinerary - I personally would not do a big hike before heading to the airport.

If you want a shorter hike on the Murren side of the valley you should consider the North face trail. It's spectacular and you could add in a trip to the Sprutz waterfall.

When are you going to be there? That might impact which hikes you will be able to do. The ridge hike doesn't open til sometime in July usually. Probably the same for the hike up from Murren.

I have to agree on that. Might be too stressful to hike the day before. What about going to Shilthorn that day? Seems like an easier day then :) I would have to give up the idea of hiking Murren to Piz Gloria...

So I could keep the hike to combine both trails: Mannlichen / Mannlichen Royal Walk / Kleine Scheidegg / Fallbodensee / Eiger Trail / Alpigen

And I could also keep this full day: Schynige Platte to First and Bachalpsee. Visit Grindelwald. https://www.earthtrekkers.com/hike-schynige-platte-to-faulhorn-to-first-switzerland/ OMG what is the ridge hike you are talking about? Love the idea of a ridge :) :)

(We will be there at the end of July)

Schynigge Platte to Faulhorn and First is a very good hike.

Your second day - Mannlichen to KS is much better than in reverse. Doing it KS to Mannlichen means the views are at your back the whole time. If you want to do the Eiger do this: Lauterbrunnen > Wengen > Mannlichen > detour Royal Walk > Kleine Scheidegg > Fallbodensee > Eigergletscher/Eiger Trail

The Schilthorn hike is very good but if you’ve had enough of big hiking, you can certainly do Schilthorn via Cable car. Another great hike option is the North Face hike counterclockwise from Allmendhubel to Murren. It ends at the Schilthornbahn so you could then ride up to the Schilthorn at the end (or the beginning) if you wanted to do a great hike over on that side of the mountain without it being as big of an undertaking as hiking all the way up to the Schilthorn. This will give you a mini version of the views you get on the Schilthorn hike.

Yeahhhhhhhhh! Sold for Lauterbrunnen > Wengen > Mannlichen > detour Royal Walk > Kleine Scheidegg > Fallbodensee > Eigergletscher/Eiger Trail / Alpigen <3 Yessssssssssss I've updated my itinerary :)

OMG I want to stay 2 weeks there ah ah! Loved your suggestion too: https://www.earthtrekkers.com/northface-trail-murren-switzerland/
This would be on day 4 before heading to the airport (flight leaves the day after at noon. I have the entire day if i want...)
Not sure how long it will take to go to Shilthorn from Lauterbrunnen back to Zurich + the short hike :)
I will check :)

In fact I have 3 full days in Zermatt after the Haute Route trek. I could shorten 1 day and spend this extra day in the Jungfrau area. That would make it 2 days Zermatt + 5 days Jungfrau region. So hard to figure out everything virtually. But what is now 100% sure is these 2 hikes :)

Thanks a million! You are such an expert! I wish i could spend more time there and get to know the area :)

I’m biased towards the hiking in the Jungfrau Region, so if you have the ability to add a day I think you have plenty of options for how to use it well!

On your last day if you want to do Schilthorn + North Face hike, you can store your luggage at the Lauterbrunnen train station and then 7:32 pm train out of Lauterbrunnen to the airport with only 1 changeover in Interlaken Ost. You’d get to the airport at 10:14 pm and just stay at one of the many airport hotels that are attached the airport. That way you have a full day + dinner before having to leave.

Of course you’ll also have to account for the fact that weather isn’t guaranteed to be perfect so you may have to adjust your choices based on weather. Another reason to add a day there to give a weather buffer day for all these amazing hikes you want to do.

Woww you are amazing! Thank you! I think we might bring all our stuff with us that day as we plan on going on a trek with only a backpack. Dont know how I will be able to survive with only a backpack during these 3 weeks lolllll!

But it could be a great idea if ever we have bought too many souvenirs loll.. Very good to know!

How many times have you traveled to this area? You seem to know everything about it. I am fascinated :) and jealous as I would love to spend more time there! :).

I guess you prefer the jungfrau area to the Zermatt area? We finish our trek in Zermatt so I though 3 full days would be great but it's still flexible :)

The ridge hike is the hike from Schnyge Platte to First:). You're already planning on doing it and it is awesome! When we did it I made sure we were on the first train going up to Schnyge Platte. Didn't want to take a chance on missing the gondola down, but you're probably in much better shape than I was. Be sure to go up to the Faulhorn and check out the views, have a drink / snack.
