Which of these 3 hikes would be the most spectacular in the Jungfrau region ? :)

Good afternoon 🙂

If you have the option between 3 activities, which one would you recommend? Which one is the most spectacular? I can only pick 2 options :)

(I know there is construction right now in Schilthorn but it will be almost over when we go there. )

  • Option 1

Cable car to Murren + Hike from Murren to Schilthorn-piz Gloria (13 kms / 6h) + lunch break at Rotstockhutte + detour to Birg station (Thrill Walk)

  • Option 2

Transportation from Lauterbrunnen to Schynige Platte. Hike from Schynige Platte to First Cliff Walk (16 kms) Short hike to Bachalpsee. Cable car to Grindewald. Visit the village. Back to Lauterbrunnen

  • Option 3

Cable car vers Jungfraujoch + Mönchsjochhütte + the Eiger Trail. Train to Kleine Scheidegg. Voir Grindelwaldblick. Back to Lauterbrunnen

Thanks a lot 🙂

I have hiked Mürren to Rotstockhütte but not to the Schilthorn summit—-I am afraid my days of ascending 1600 meters in a day are past. And when I was young and strong enough to do it, we never had a day when the weather was reliable enough to make the hike safe. It is not something I would do solo in any case.

The hike to the hut was nice, but there are lots of cows and their residue along the way, so one must tread carefully. And going up, the main view I like (the snowy peaks across the valley) are behind you.

I have hiked the Panoramaweg from Schynige Platte to the First top station and it was spectacular. The view changes as you proceed—-at times you can look down to the left to see the Brienzersee, and at others you are looking down to the Grindelwald side and the snowy peaks on the other side of the valley. I had to tread carefully here as well, but that was due to looking around at the scenery. You sill pas the Bachalpsee on the way—-no need to detour. But if there is time, you can detour to the top of the Faulhorn and the hut there, for a 360 degree view.

You have probably seen this blog with photos of the hike, but I will post it for others who might be curious about this hike.

Just make sure you do not arrive late and miss the gondola down to Grindelwald.

That is exactly the website I found that makes me decide on this hike!!!!!!! :) :)

Do you think the hike from Murren to Schilthorn-piz Gloria could be very "similar" to the views at the Jungfraujoch?

I am actually planning this day:

Cable car vers Jungfraujoch + Mönchsjochhütte + the Eiger Trail. Train to Kleine Scheidegg. Voir Grindelwaldblick. Back to Lauterbrunnen

Should I thus rather hike from Schynige Platte to First Cliff Walk the other day?

Ah ah basically I have 3 options and I need to pick 2! :)

  • Cable car vers Jungfraujoch + MönchsjochhĂĽtte + the Eiger Trail. Train to Kleine Scheidegg. Voir Grindelwaldblick. Back to Lauterbrunnen

  • Murren + lunch break at Rotstockhutte + Schilthorn-piz Gloria + Birg and Thrill Walk (

  • Hike entre Schynige Platte to First Cliff Walk (16 kms) Short hike to Bachalpsee. Cable car to Grindewald. Visite du village)

What is your hiking ability? Murren to Schilthorn via Rotstockhutte is an experienced level hike that requires hiking poles, good shoes, planning (arrival before last cable car down), etc. — you also don’t say when you are doing this hike. Construction won’t be done until the end of 2025, so I’m assuming you’re planning way in the distance if you’re saying it’s going to be done? Regardless, the construction doesn’t really affect that hike. I personally would rather do Birg > Grauseeli > Rotstockhutte > Murren but that’s because I don’t love the super steep scree hike at the end of the Schilthorn hike. It’s gorgeous, but a bit treacherous.

Share you travel dates & fitness level for me to give you a better idea of my suggestion.

Thanks a lot for your reply. Yes planning for July 2025 :)

We are advanced hikers. We would have just finished the Haute Route from Verbier to Zermatt. (We are doing TMB this coming september) .

We want 2 full days of hiking in this area. We would stay in Lauterbrunnen I think. I have to pick 2 day hikes out of the 3 I mentioned :)

What do you think of my 3 hikes lol :) ??

By “Eiger trail”, do you mean the one from Eigergletscher on the Jungfrau trail line down to Alpiglen? Then train back up to Kleine Scheidegg? We have hiked that one too ( when it first opened, and was called the “Eiger Northface trail” because it traverses below the famous climbers peak. But I will postpone further comment until you confirm that.

Yes :)

Cable car to Jungfraujoch + short hike to Mönchsjochhütte (It’s 2.4 km one way and takes about 45 minutes to hike out to the hut) + From Jungfraujoch, ride the Jungfraubahn to the Eigergletscher station. Hike to Alpigen. Train to Kleine Scheidegg. Voir Grindelwaldblick. And back to Lauterbrunnen

https://www.earthtrekkers.com/one-day-in-the-jungfrau-region-jungfraujoch-eiger-trail/

Morning: Jungfraujoch
Midday: Depart Jungfraujoch
Very early afternoon: Hike the Eiger Trail
Mid-afternoon: Train from Alpiglen to Kleine Scheidegg
Mid-afternoon: Kleine Scheidegg. Walk the very first section of the Panorama Trail to Restaurant Grindelwaldblick and enjoy the view. Then, walk back to the Kleine Scheidegg station and use public transportation to return to your hotel.

And then the other options

Option 1

Cable car to Murren + Hike from Murren to Schilthorn-piz Gloria (13 kms / 6h) + lunch break at Rotstockhutte + detour to Birg station (Thrill Walk)

Option 2

Transportation from Lauterbrunnen to Schynige Platte. Hike from Schynige Platte to First Cliff Walk (16 kms) Short hike to Bachalpsee. Cable car to Grindewald. Visit the village. Back to Lauterbrunnen

I need to pick the best 2 options ah ah!

There is no cable car to Jungfraujoch for your plan. It’s a train ride in the dark. Do the Schynigge Platte to First & Murren to Schilthorn via Rotstockhutte. They both have more majestic views than the Eiger/Jungfraujoch hiking. For that one you’re so close up to the mountain that you’re almost too close for views. The others are more worth the effort in my opinion.

You can also do First to Schynigge Platte in reverse — if you want to hike west instead of east and a different elevation profile.

For Schilthorn, leave early in the morning to make sure you’re not rushing the last bit up to make the last cable car down. We’ve made it up in 4.5 hours without stopping at Rotstockhutte, but that was major rushing. It’s better to allow 8 hours for a more leisurely time. I’d probably leave Murren no later than 7 am to allow a leisure lunch and time at the top of the Schilthorn. You could even stop to swim at Grauseeli if you allow enough buffer.

Yes it's a long ride from Lauterbrunnen to Jungfraujoch! I only indicated cable car to sum up lol!

Lauterbrunnen Option #1: train from Lauterbrunnen to Kleine Scheidegg (through Wengen): 42 minutes; Kleine Scheidegg to Jungfraujoch on the Jungfraubahn: 35 minutes; Total time including transfers: 1 hour 41 minutes

Lauterbrunnen Option #2: train from Lauterbrunnen to Zweilutschinen: 9 minutes; Zweilutschinen to Grindelwald Terminal: 17 minutes; Eiger Express to Eigergletscher: 20 minutes; Jungfraubahn to Jungfraujoch: 26 minutes. Travel time is 1 hour 39 minutes including transfers.

I liked the idea or the Eiger trail but the price for Jungfraujoch is crazy :(

I totally agree with waking up early. We would be in Lauterbrunnen though. Might be hard to be in Murren at 7am but I will check.

Thanks a lot :)

You can easily get to Murren by around 7 am from Lauterbrunnen. People live up there so transport starts around 6 in the morning and takes 23 minutes. You can start later, I just wouldn’t start any later than 9 am if you don’t want to be rushed.
