Here's my question. Should I stay in Lucern to see the sights, or is it best to day trip out of Zurich? I will be traveling through Lucern on my way to Zurich which is the city I will be flying out of. I have heard some say base out Zurich as there is much more to do there. I already will have stayed in the Murren area, so will I be seeing much of the same? Would it be best to see another area instead?

Well, my wife and I have a daughter in Zurich, so we spend weeks in summer and Christmas there. We love the city, but it's not exactly a hot spot for tourists (except for the Landesmuseum). We wander everywhere and see lots of interesting things that aren't listed in books. But, really, Lucern is the way to go as a tourist. It has much more to see and the restaurants along the river are fun. Take a steamer and go up Rigi!

There are frequent direct trains from Luzern to Zurich Airport in one hour. Luzern is closer to the mountains. Zurich is best if you are into high culture (Art museums, Opera, Symphony, etc).
