Where to stop in-between Salzburg and Murren

I'm trying to piece together a 3 or 3 1/2 week route for Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, ending in Switzerland. As of now, I'd be leaving from Salzburg, heading towards a 2-3 day stay in Murren before departing from Zurich airport, but that stretch between Salzburg and Murren is a long train ride. What what be a good location in-between to spend a couple of days?

Thank you for any advice.

You might think about going the long way between Zurich and Muerren by stopping at Luzern. Then a scenic train ride between there and Interlaken and on to Muerren.

With only 2-3 days to devote to Mürren I’d just rip the bandaid off and do a long travel day. If you split it up, you don’t really get quality time at the stopover and you lose a day of an already short stay somewhere you’re going to absolutely want more than 2 days at. We spend time in Austria every summer and then do the 3.5 hr drive + 7.5 hr train ride to our place in Mürren all in one day every year. It’s somewhat of a long day, but I’d rather get it out of the way than drag it out. We get first class on the train and when you purchase in advance it’s actually not that much more expensive, you can walk around on the train, play games, nap, etc and all in all I actually find it an enjoyable day. Feels a bit like an adventure :)

We purchase through Bahn.de as we return our rental car to Munich and train from there. When you purchase through them or OBB you get to pick your seats in first class. We typically purchase around 3-4 months ahead of time and find that first class with seat reservations is literally cheaper than a last minute second class ticket, by about half. Since it’s a fixed time journey for us, we don’t mind buying that ticket ahead of time.
