Where to stay one night in Geneva/Lausanne/Montreux area

My family of 5 (kids ages 9, 11, 14) will be traveling from Paris to Geneva/Lausanne/Montreux area in early June. Our ultimate destination is Murren but we won't be leaving Paris until early afternoon so decided to spend a night in one of these towns, before leaving the next day for the BO. I had read that the train ride from Paris to Geneva is scenic and I was interested in doing the GoldenPass Line from Montreux to Interlaken. Does anyone have any recommendations about which town to stay the night in and where? We won't get in until early evening and will leave late morning, so there won't be much time to sightsee.

I like Vevey. Cute town, right on the lake and very scenic.

Another vote for Vevey!
And, coming from Paris, you should take the TGV high-speed train to Lausanne, not Geneva. Paris-Lausanne is a bit more scenic than Paris-Geneva, although some Paris-Lausanne trains now pass through Geneva apparently.

If you’re staying less than 24 hours and wont have time to really explore, I’m not sure it matters where to stay. I stayed three nights in Vevey at the Hostellerie de Geneva and would recommend, but to me the top attraction in the area is Chateau de Chillion in Montreux so perhaps stay closer to it and see it in the morning.

I would probably stay in Lausanne in the Port D'Ouchy area right on Lake Geneva. The views are beautiful and there is easy train access from Lausanne to Montreux and Vevey if you like. Lausanne has a lovely Old Town area as well. We took the Golden Pass train from Interlaken to Lucerne in Switzerland on another trip and it had gorgeous scenery.

In Montreux, the Grand Hotel Swiss is just steps from the train station.

With one night I second Carrie, the Grand Hotel is literally right across from the train station in Montreux. Stayed there myself, perfect for train travel

Montreux has a beautiful lakefront promenade and the Château de Chillon is well worth a visit if you have the time. Also, the Queen Studio Experience is interesting.
