Looking for advice on a small town in the mountains to stay within a few hours of Milan? We would like to do a hike that can start within walking distance of a train or bus, and prefer a town that may offer reasonable accommodations, and that is interesting to walk around. We will stay a day, and then take train to Milan to meet with others.
Thanks!
Any suggestions?

One thought that comes to mind is Stresa, which is only about an hour from Milan. As I recall there are some hiking trails on Mt. Mottarone, so you could take the Cable Car to the top and hike back down. Here's one website that describes that.....

- Lugano - I vaguely recall some hiking on Mt. San Salvatore
- Locarno - take the Funicular and Cable Car up to Cardada, which is just above the city. Lots of hiking in beautiful alpine meadows.
