Where to stay in or near city center for Lucern,Bern, and Zematt with breakfast and inexpensive

Please help with places to stay in Lucerne for two nights, Bern for one night, and Zermatt for one night. We will be there in Oct. 2014. Also, really need help with which train pass to get. Swiss, Sharepass, Flexi?
We start in Basel then go to Lucern then to Murren then Bern, then Zermatt, then Montreux then from there we go to Stresa Italy, Venice and Rome. 13 days in Switzerland before going to Italy. We will not have a car and need unlimited trains, buses, cable cars etc. to get us all over. Someone PLEASE help with this, as well as help finding places to stay as I mentioned above.
Thank you so much.

sue,

Some suggestions....

  • Lucerne - Hotel Stern
  • Bern - Hotel Continental

I don't know if these are considered "inexpensive" as you didn't provide any information on your price criteria. I should emphasize that Switzerland is expensive so budget accordingly.

Check your local Library or bookstores to find copies of the RS Guidebooks for each of the places you'll be visiting. The books have good information on hotels in each location in different price ranges, and will also provide lots of information on sightseeing, transportation, etc.

Regarding which Swiss Pass to buy, you'll need to do some number crunching based on where you'll be travelling while you're in Switzerland. There are a lot of different passes and it takes a lot of time and effort to wade through them all. You WON'T be able to get a Pass that will provide "unlimited trains, buses, cable cars etc. to get us all over" as the situation varies in each country. Many of the Swiss Passes only provide discounted (50%) rides on the Cable Cars.

One other point to note is that Railpasses are rarely cost effective for use in Italy. Keep in mind that many of the trains in Italy require compulsory reservations and these are NOT included with Railpasses. You'll have to pay "out of pocket" for the reservations. Be sure to have valid reservations on trains where these are required, or you'll likely face hefty fines, which will be collected on the spot! Also, Railpasses are not accepted by some of the rail networks in Italy such as Italo or Circumvesuviana.

It's great that you're getting an early start on the planning as it will give you time to work out all the details.

A Swiss Pass would run 428 chf for a Saver 15 day 2nd class. You have 6 main travel days with 332 chf worth of tickets plus whatever for day trips, mountain railways, cable cars etc. Often, the biggies, Jungfraujoch, Schithorn, Gornergrat only give a 50% discount with a Swiss Pass. So that may be hit or miss depending how many other trips you do. The one month half fare card for 120 chf is sure to save you money. You still get the 50% discount on the mountain rails, as well as all of your other rail trips.
Cheap digs in Zermatt are not plentiful, (probably nonexistent), but my favorite is the Ambiance. Ask for a Matterhorn view room and hope you have good weather.

Sam,

Thank you for your help. I will check out the Ambiance. Still need to figure out the Rail System as which one will work the best. I know that getting to Italy will be separate tickets. It is just getting all around Switzerland that I am confused about. Are you familiar with the Share Pass?

My thanks again.

Ken,
Thank you for your help and input. I am aware that the trains in Italy are separate from the Rail Pass in Switzerland. Sorry, I wasn't very clear about that. I just need to figure out, going from Basel to Lucerne to Murren to Bern to Zermatt then to Montreux and doing day trips in between these cities, which pass would work? I am winding up in Montreux because it looks like it is easy to get to Stresa, Italy from there, then off to Venice and Rome.
Thank you again. I hope I can figure it all out. it sure has kept me busy.

If you want to visit Montreux, the more logical path would be Bern-Montreux-Zermatt-Stresa. You ride the train from Zermatt all the way to Brig where you can connect to the EC train direct to Stresa. Going Zermatt-Montreux-Stresa involves a lot of back tracking.

We stayed at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Lucerne, a few years ago. It is within walking distance of the train station.

Sue, it's been quite a few years but we stayed at the Hotel Tschugge in Zermatt and loved it. We did not have a Matterhorn view but our balcony looked out toward Monte Rosa which was also a spectacular view. The restaurant is built into the rocks in the cellar of the hotel and when we were there served excellent food. I'm not sure what your budget is but I know the hotel still gets good reviews on booking.com and TA.
