Hi,
What are you planning to do there? Depending on your answer, it is likely that Interlaken is no t the best place for you. If you want to explore the mountains of the Berner Oberland, it is better to stay closer to them: for 2 nights, Lauterbrunnen would work well. Or Wengen, a short train ride up the mountain. There's also Mürren but it gets a bit more complicated (cable car+train), depends what you want to see really!

Unless there is some particular reason to be in Interlaken, my suggestion would be to go further into the alps and stay in Lauterbrunnen. You will be closer to any mountain hike or excursion. Google Lauterbrunnen valley and you will see stunning pictures.

jenny,

As the others have mentioned, you'll probably have a much more enjoyable visit if you stay in the beautiful Lauterbrunnen Valley, which is about 20 minutes by train from Interlaken. Although many people here really enjoy staying in the mountain villages like Mürren, for a short stay of two nights I'd suggest staying in Lauterbrunnen. There are several good hotels there, and that's a good location to explore both sides of the valley as it's the transportation hub for that area.

A stay of two nights will only provide about a day and a half for actual sightseeing, once transportation times are included, so you'll need to plan your time carefully.

When will this trip be taking place?

2 nights is perfect. Lauterbrunnen is a wonderful town and the hotel we stayed in was great, with an amazing view of the valley and the falls. Hotel Staubbach. And try parasailing from the chairlifts to the valley. Awesome!

Interlaken - best used as a place to change trains. There is nothing in Interlaken for you to see because you’re coming to this area to see the magnificent Swiss Alps...which are not in Interlaken. Tour companies steer people to interlaken because they can squeeze in their large groups into the large hotels.

To answer your question, we stayed at Hotel Royal St. George in Interlaken for two nights and had a balcony with views of the paragliders over the rooftops and cows in a pasture below the mountains. This hotel was within easy walking distance of the train station. We enjoyed Interlaken as a base and took the train from there to see Wengen and Lauterbrunnen during the day. The Unterseen area of Interlaken is a lovely area to walk also. The meadow with views of the Jungfrau is beautiful. There are many great restaurants in Interlaken as well.
