Hotel Allegro Kursaal - we stayed there July 2016. Easy to reach the hotel using public transportation and also to reach the train station and the old town.

rw,

I've stayed at Hotel Continental and based on that, would certainly recommend it. The rooms were clean and modern, and they served a nice breakfast. It's not too far from the station.

Hotel Metropole. Smack dab in the middle of everything in Old Town, one block from the tram, easy two/three blocks to the train station. Big clean rooms, with own bathrooms, and a (teeny tiny) elevator.

If you're looking for something relatively inexpensive, there's an Ibis and an Ibis Budget opposite the convention center, a 10 minute tram ride from the center. (You get a local transit pass for the duration of your stay from the hotel).

I stayed at the Ibis Budget, and while it was fine for a single person, I wouldn't recommend it for two or more. Although there's a double bed with a bunk bed above it, there's just a few hangars for clothes (no closet). There's no "bathroom," just a sink in the room, a shower and a toilet compartment, so if someone wanted privacy, they'd have to use the toilet compartment. However, the toilet door doesn't go all the way to the top or bottom, so you can hear everything.

All that said, it was cheap (for Bern), and it worked fine for a short stay for one person. For more than one person or a longer stay, but still a good deal, use the regular Ibis.

Hotel Allegro- short tram ride from train station. Also has AC which is essential in summer.
