Itinerary for Jungfrau and accommodation options

Hi all
I found this forum quite by chance and since I have spent days pouring over the forum posts - it has been the best resource I have found anywhere on the internet. Credit to you all.

I am planning my maiden voyage this July/August. My itinerary is as follows:

Day 1 - arrive interlaken 18:00hrs

Day 2- Interlaken and Heimwehfluh. Morning - boat trip on Brienz and visit Giessbach Falls. Afternoon - Harder Kulm and relax in Höhematte Park

Day 3- Lauterbrunnen & Winteregg. Morning – Lauterbrunnen and Trummelbach Falls. Visit Allmendhubel flower playground. Afternoon - hike down from the playground to Murren on the flower trail.

Day 4- Grindelwald. Morning - Grindelwald First. Morning - Grindelwald First, mountain carts from Schreckfeld station to Bort. Bort playground. Afternoon - Gletchschlucht Glacier Gorge

Day 5- Mannlichen. Morning - Mannlichen Cow playground, Lieselotte activity trail + treetop path (Baumwipfelpfad), stop at Holenstein (Wood playground) and back down to Grindelwald station.

Day 6 (Sat 02/08) – Travel to Chur

The order of the days are not fixed.

Is there anything glaringly obviously wrong with my itinerary? Will be my partner and I , plus 8 year old son.

We haven't accommodation sorted - I am getting a bit blown away with trying to understand where to stay - it feels like we should base ourselves in the 1 place given the shortness of the stay? Should we be looking at interlaken (convenience) and then travel in and up each day? Or should we be looking at Wilderswil? Or go further update (views) and stay somewhere like Wengen/Murren or Grindelwald?

I am wary of the busy days and not wishing to add to it with travel each evening (that and this is part of a 3 country trip via train already).

Thanks in advance,

You can certainly do all this from one location, no need to move around.

I would put Heimwehfluh and hanging out at Höhematte park way down on the list of priorities, other things you mention are far more spectacular.

If you don’t mind the longer journey up (almost one hour) then Schynige Platte is another great location and they have a fun playground there as well. You will be greeted by alphorn players in the traditional Bernese costume.

Your lodging options are going to be very slim pickins at this point, so you’ll have to see what you can get. But if possible, I’d try for Wengen first and if you can’t find anything there, then Grindelwald. Wilderswil is just an in between “suburb” of Interlaken and doesn’t have any charm or views. Interlaken is crowded and hot in the summer so if you stay there AC is a must.

In addition to hotels, for a 5 night stay you can look at chalet apartments via e-domizil, interhome, Wengen Apartments, Alpine Chalet Services, airbnb, vrbo, etc. but as I mentioned, you’re probably going to see less than 5% of options available at this point so focus on that ASAP. There are multiple great hotels in Wengen if you can still find availability at any of them, but the chalet apartment will be cheaper for 5 days, also allowing you a kitchen to save on some breakfasts/lunches or picnic dinners.

Your Day 5 is Swiss National Day (August 1st). It’s one big party and you should save it to enjoy all the cultural festivities that go on. There are parades, fireworks, music, food, etc. etc. basically everywhere you go. Wengen will have a party. Murren has a cow parade in the morning + kids activities and live music/food/fireworks in the afternoon/evening which is where we live, so that’s the one I know about the most, but they will have fun things going on everywhere.

Your Day 2 has your least exciting mix of activities. From Wengen I’d do something like this (weather dates flexible obviously)….

Day 1 - Arrive in Wengen, dinner

Day 2 - Wengen > Mannlichen > Lieselotte Trail > Grindelwald Terminal > Eiger Express to Eigergletscher (cool ride) > walk or train down to Kleine Scheidegg (nice spot for a treat) > train back to Wengen

Day 3 - Wengen > Lauterbrunnen > Grutschalp > Murren > Allmendhubel playground > funicular back down to Murren to explore (skip the walk you mentioned) > optional Schilthorn & Birg for amazing views > lovely & easy paved walk down to Gimmelwald (explore the farm) > cable car down to Stechelberg > bus to Lauterbrunnen (stop at Trummelbach Falls if you want to wait in line, you should keep this a low priority) > Wengen

Day 4 - Wengen > Lauterbrunnen > Wilderswil > Schniyge Platte (open air cog train to views much better than Harder Kulm + kids trail) > Wilderswil > Interlaken Ost > boat ride to Giessbach (optional dinner or ice cream at the historic hotel) > Interlaken Ost > Lauterbrunnen > Wengen

Day 5 - Weather buffer for all the above activities as highest priorities + make time for Swiss National Day activities. It’s a unique cultural experience. Grindelwald First activity lines are usually 3-5 hours long. If you really want to see Grindelwald First, you could go there + Bort in the morning (skip the lines) and then be back in a village in the afternoon/evening for all the festivities. Or if the cow parade is something your son would enjoy, go back over to Murren again.

Day 6 - Travel to Chur

With this itinerary, you should probably be getting a Half Fare Card + Family Card (son will travel for free) + possibly a reduced fare Jungfrau Travel Pass or Berner Oberland Pass depending on which specific activities you determine are best for you. Don’t pay full price for everything, especially since you’re going to Chur, so at the very least get the HFC (120 chf per adult + free family card for your son)

@wanderweg - This is amazing. Thank you. On your advice i have booked accommodation in Wengen immediately. Your itinerary makes much more sense and is truly insightful. If I could award a prize for the best post and most helpful person you would win it. The Schniyge Platte looks amazing.

If I may could I ask some brief follow up questions?

Is the Pfingstegg mountain coaster worth a trip? (perhaps on Day 2 when I am at Mannlichen).
The Gletchschlucht Glacier Gorge looks great (I think my son would like the spider net) - it looks to be a bus ride out of grindelwald - I am guessing there is likely to be crowds here also?

I think for either of these it would have to be Day 2 - by taking out the Eiger Express to Eigergletscher (I am not sure my son would enjoy that).

The National day celebrations - thank you. I wasn't aware and it sounds amazing. I will def block out my afternoon and evening to enjoy these!

I cannot wait to visit Wengen and Murren. What a beautiful country.

Sounds wonderful! Have a great trip. I would cut your movement in half, much depends on the weather that particular day so you need to be flexible. July is the rain season in the Alps, bring gear. Day 3 is three days not one day. I would recommend staying in Murren, Wengen and Grindelwald have way too many tourists for me (thank you so much RS). Stay up on the Alp, whatever alp as the valley, any valley won't get very many hours of sun and the alp will much more. J

What kind words, thank you! I really enjoy helping, so I appreciate knowing that I’ve been helpful to you!

In regards to your Day 2, I think Mannlichen, Lieselotte, Pfingstegg & the glacier is a bit much because of the logistics to get between all of them. I’d pick either the Pfingstegg toboggan and zip line OR the Gorge. You know your son better on which you think he’d enjoy more. You could then still go back to Grindelwald Terminal and do the Eiger Express (it is a pretty cool ride - 30 person gondolas with 360 degree views and if you go in the afternoon you may end up with one mostly to yourselves to move around). From Eigergletscher you can then hike or train down to Kleine Scheidegg for a treat and amazing views (the Apfelkuchen is very good and the souvenir shop in KS is the best in the area if you want to get anything). It’s a pretty cool area and the train ride from KS to Wengen is one I wouldn’t miss (sit on the left side leaving the station).

Another option is to take the Eiger Express, then train down to KS and do a 20 minute detour walk up to Fallbodensee. Kids (and adults!) love the kneipp bath up there. You might just want to have the logistics worked out for all the options and then just play it by ear on what you’re feeling that day.

Let me know if you need anymore help!

unless I missed it, you're not going to either Schilthorn or Jungfraujoch?

You mentioned Jungfrau in your revised heading title so I wonder...

Wengen has a lot of hotels, but it is terrible for logistics, If someone wants to visit Murren or Giessbach Falls, then it is more convenient to stay for 2-3 days in Interlaken (and don't waste time on commute from Wengen to Lauterbrunnen and further).
Wengen is cool if you want to do all the hikes in the area. But usually 3 days is a max... Interlaken gives more options for bad weather.
Murren is a killer for any logistics - it is end of the world (beautiful though), but you need to take a cable car to get there and a buss or train from Lauterbrunnen. Check SBB for connections and how much time will be wasted on "waiting".
