where to go switzerland

Thinking about several days in Switzerland, perhaps 4 or 5, to add to a riverboat trip which ends in Basel. Would like to stay in Lucerne a night or 2. I've been to Zermatt but my husband has not. Should we go there or to Murren?

Also, I am thinking about adding the town of Stresa, Italy, on Lake Margorie for a night or 2 so that we can tour Isola Bella ( the gardens). Any thoughts on hotels?

You could split your time between Lucerne and Mürren, as both places are well worth a visit. I'd suggest skipping Zermatt this time.

Stresa would also be an excellent place to stop for a couple of nights (or perhaps three nights). It's difficult to suggest hotels there without having some idea on your criteria (price range & comfort level, etc.). In addition to the Borromeo Islands, one nice activity in Stresa is to take a day trip to Locarno (Switzerland) on the scenic Cento Valli Railway, returning to Stresa in the early evening by boat.

Ken, thank you for the reply and suggestions. If we decide to go to Stresa, Italy, the day trip to Locarno, Switzerland sounds good (train and boat). This trip is in the planning stage for 2016 so I have time to explore several options.
Another question about Murren though. Would staying in the town in the valley be better? I know that some would reject that idea. Just thinking which would work better for a couple of retirees. We would likely travel in Sept. 2016. Would you recommend another time? Oct? We don't mind cooler weather! Thanks!
