Where to go from Geneva

My husband and I will be in Geneva for 2 weeks in May visiting our son who is studying there. I am looking for day trips or max one night trips within Switzerland , as I want to see my son at the end of the day. One weekend we will travel with my son. So Friday, Saturday Sunday we can have a longer trip but also within Switzerland. Travel dates are 5/2-5/14
Can you help me with the most efficient way to do this? One night and one day will be spent in Lyon.
Thank you for your help, Jasmin

Bern, Luzern, Gruyères (where the cheese comes from).
Pick the day with the best weather forecast, and go up into the Berner Oberland. Somewhere after Interlaken, such as Grindelwald, Wengen, Mürren. If the weather is really good (and your budget allows it) you can go to the top of one of the mountains.

All of the above are possible as day trips by train from Geneva. Go to the Swiss Federal Railways website for times and prices: www.sbb.ch

Neuchâtel, Montreux, Zermatt (must be a good weather day). Take a boat trip on lake Geneva.
Take a circular trip on the Montreux - Berner Oberland Railway (MOB) (Geneva --> Montreux --> Spiez --> Bern --> Geneva)

Hi Jasmin- several years ago, while staying in Geneva, I made a worthwhile cheese pilgrimage to
Gruyeres, both to the cheese factory and to the old town. I went by train, which involved a transfer in both directions. Rick Steves' guidebook also describes a visit to Moleson up the road, for another cheesy visit.

If you turned south, you could also consider a visit to Annecy, France, which could also be visited on the way to/from Lyon.

A very easy day trip from Geneva is Chamonix! Gorgeous town in the French Alps and the home of Mont Blanc. Highly recommend!
