Where to go after our tour ends in Bern

We are doing a tour to see the Passion Play and our tour ends in Bern. We'd like to stay another week on our own. Please give us suggestions. We will not be renting a car, but are fine with the train system. Thanks

I'd head to the Berner Oberland - staying in Murren or Wengen. Plenty to do there and so lovely. Another place most folks on this board recommend is Lucerne - haven't been there personally but it gets lots of raves.

I agree with Kelly. You could make a very nice week with Berner Oberland + Luzern/Lucerne. I did both (on the same trip) without a car.

Another vote for Kelly's suggestion. I don't know of anyone who has ever not enjoyed this area!

Where will you be departing from, for your return flight? If Zurich, then ending in Luzern is good, because you can take a train directly to the Zurich airport (1.25 hours) from there.

No tickets booked yet, so not sure which airport. Dates are 1st two weeks in October.

Here is a link for an earlier discussion of travel to the Berner-Oberland region in October. It would be a great place to spend a week. I spent several days there in late September and stayed in Lauterbrunnen (allows quicker access to both sides of the valley) and several days in Murren (amazing views and closer to some hikes and trips including the ride to the Schilthorn).

From Bern, you could also do a day trip to Murten (small walled city near a beautiful lake) and Avenches (Roman ruins, including a large amphitheater).

All the best,
