We are traveling from Zurich to Zermatt in mid October with our 2 teenage daughters and have 4 days in between where should we stop?

If the weather is gd then the lauterbrunnen valley. However if it is raining then opt for a beautiful town as Lucern. Or 2 days ea if u can.

With that kind of time on your hands, if you want to stay in Switzerland, take the train to Montreux and see Castle Chillon and Lake Geneva. If you want to hike, go to Zinal. If Italy interests you, you can take the train from Zurich to Brig and go from there to Milan and environs. You'll just be in time to catch the Milan Expo, and they have discount trains just for the occasion. It's a three-hour train ride from Milan back to Zermatt.
