Where is the best place to stay in the Lucerne area?

Hi,

My family and I (we're all adults) are going to be in Switzerland for the first week of October 2018. We would like to stay in one place and make day trips (by train) exploring the Lucerne and Interlaken area.

Most of our days would include activities like hiking, kayaking, paragliding, etc. We were considering staying in Interlaken itself, but after reading several review have decided against it. Which is the ideal place for us to stay?

Any and all advice would be much appreciated!

Rather than Interlaken, stay in the nearby mountain towns such as Grindelwald with excellent train connections. Stay in Lucerne and Grindelwald, two places, too far apart to stay one place for a good experience. I rank Geindelwald and it’s area over Lucerne although Lucerne is beautiful, just not as breathtaking.

The Luzern and Interlaken Areas are two different areas, 1 h 49 to get from one to the other by train (over the scenic Brünig pass).

In the Luzern Area the obvious place to stay is Luzern itself, in the town centre. This gives you access to train and boats to get you anywhere in the area.

In the Interlaken Area (normally called the Jungfrau Area), do not stay in Interlaken itself. Instead stay in one of the smaller places further into the mountains: Mürren, Lauterbrunnen, Wengen or Grindelwald.
