We are Americans and have been to Switzerland several times. We can't find any other country that is as beautiful. (The south island of NZ is a close runner up to Switzerland - we went there last year). We are planning a trip in Sept. 2017 and are looking for recommendations for a different beautiful destination to go hiking (as in easy to moderate). We are in our 60's and can't do what we used to, but still can hike as much 5 or 6 miles, as long as there is not a lot of elevation gain. Is there another area that is comparable to the Lauterbrunnen area, besides St. Moritz and Zermatt or should we just go back to the Berner Oberland? We have spent 11 days in Wengen (our favorite place on earth), a week in Pontresina (near St. Moritz) and 4 days in Zermatt on 3 different trips. We also went to Chamonix, the French Alps. We have also been to the Italian Alps, the Dolomites, and are considering going back to that area. We only spent 4 days there and I feel like there is probably a lot more to see. Where do you recommend?
Mannlichen to Klein schedegg has very good trail. But we fell in love with North face trail which starts from allmenduhbehl near Murren. It was stunner. Must do for any hiking lovers
We have a constant debate: Lauterbrunnen Valley/Berner Oberland versus the Val Gardena in Italy's Dolomites as the favorite hiking destination. We are "easy hikers" and worshipers of mountain trains and lifts. Each location has great hikes in the easy to moderate range, each has great transportation, and each has stunning scenery. Italy has the edge in cost and food. If you have only spent 4 days in the Dolomites, give it another try. We spent a month in Ortisei last summer and relished every moment. Going back for a brief visit this fall, but maybe Switzerland next year....
Gstaad and Lake Constance are nice areas.
Have you done all good trails in the Lauterbrunnen/Grindelwald areas?
- Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg (and even further to Wengernalp)
- Grutschalp to Murren
- Top of Almendhubel, go right, generally heading above Winteregg, then clockwise back down to Murren
- Top of Almendhubel, go left, towards Schiltalp, then Spielbodenalp, then to Murren
- Murren to Sprutz Falls, under the falls, up the opposite side to Spielbodenalp, then back to Murren
- Lauterbrunnen to Trummelbach Falls walk through the valley
- Schynige Platte to First (6 hrs, but great!)
- First to Bachalpsee and return (shorter version of #7)
- First to Grosse Scheidegg and bus back to Grindelwald
- Grindelwald, cable car to Pfingstegg (take the Rodelbahn luge ride there!), hike to Berghaus Baregg

Saas Fee The next valley to Zermatt/Matterhorn. Great hikes. Beautiful mountains. Spend at least as many days as you would in Zermatt.
I am curious: What did you decide to do?
