What train stop should I get off at? Varenna ---> northbound

Taking the train at Varenna (Lake Como) for a morning/ lunch stop/ day trip into Switzerland with a 3 yr old. We'd love to take the train with the reservations on the outbound (I'm assuming this train is more classic style? i.e. an interesting option for a kid who loves trains?) and the regional train back.

Questions-
*I believe we take a train from Varenna north to Tirano. Then there's a train from Tirano to St. Moritz....is that correct? How long of a train ride is it from Varenna to Tirano?

  • We don't want to go all the way to St. Moritz as we're really looking for a day trip ( i.e. leave from Varenna around 9am and home by 5pm type trip). Where would you get off if you're on the train from Tirano to St. Moritz?

*I've heard of Alp Gruem - any thoughts on making this our stop or is there some place with a bit more to do?

  • If we did get off at Alp Gruem does anyone know roughly how long of a train trip it is from Tirano?
    Many thanks.

2 hours and 45 minutes to Alp Gruem. departing Varenna-Esino at 9:25. Only 8 minutes to change trains and stations in Tirano. RhB station is across the piazza from the Nord station where you arrive. 13:44 departure from Alp Gruem gets you back to Varenna at 16:34.again, only 8 minutes to make the change at Tirano. None of these trains have reservations. The regular trains from Tirano to Alp Gruem are almost never crowded.

Schedules at https://www.sbb.ch/en/buying/pages/fahrplan/fahrplan.xhtml

Note that Italian regional trains do not show on the schedule after June 8. Don't worry, they will show up when June rolls around. Schedule should not change, just use the same day of the week for before June 8.

so a nice 90 minutes at Alp Grüm - time to look around and get lunch, or get lunch and look around until just before the return train.

If you miss your connection at Tirano you can take the next train.
