What to wear up in Jungfraujoch area

I’m staying 3 nights in Wengen late August.
I’d read to wear layers so thought a raincoat w a sweater underneath. Is that enough when going up to Jungfraujoch and First or even Schilthorn?
Do I need a winter jacket and gloves?
Trying to keep to packing in a carry-on.
Thanks.

In August I’ve worn a T-shirt up at Schilthorn before and then sometimes a sweatshirt. You don’t need a winter coat in August, just bring layers. Even up at Jungfraujoch I was fine in a sweatshirt.

Fully agree with wanderweg.
The sun can be hot and sunburn can happen. Pack sunscreen, for your face at least.

Last summer on Jungfraujich it was very windy. I had a wool sweater under a windbreaker, winter scarf and gloves and was fine outside and in the ice cave. Once the fog rolled in, there wasn’t more reason to be outside because we couldn’t see anything.

Thank you all so much! I feel so much better. I’ll skip the winter coat and go w what I have.
And yup, I’ve got sunscreen ready!

Did anyone have trouble w altitude sickness?

Appreciate your comments.

When up on the Jungfrau just move a bit slower. The air is thinner, and you will quickly notice that you shouldn't run...
But other than that you should be fine.

On last piece of advise: Have good shoes. I do often see people going up with very inappropriate footwear. Good shoes and socks are a must, as you will be walking on snow and ice.

We were up there last week. The only place that was cold was inside the glacier walk and that was very slippery. Outside was very warm. As previously mentioned, wear shoes that give you support on slushy snow or slick ice if you want to walk outside or do glacier walk, sandals aren’t going to handle it.

Good to hear!
Was it worth battling the crowds at Jungfraujoch or is Schilthorn better?

Schilthorn you will be in a packed cable car. The train going up the Jungfrau is packed too, but at least most people have seats. Only the ones standing in the aisle feel like sardines.

I saw several folks going up in sandals and sundresses, because it was warm in the valley. Then I saw those same folks in the gift shop buying overpriced jackets. One "influencer" had open toe sandals as she was trying to set up her camera and tripod, on the snow. Note that there are no cleared paths in the snow, so the walking is on uneven snowy terrain. It is an incredible experience! Safe travels!

The views are incredible. You’re just going to need a whole lot of patience with others if it’s crowded….:)
