What to wear in Murren in ealy June?

During a one month vacation in Europe, my wife and I will be in Murren for four nights in early June. We plan to take the cable car to one or two of the peaks, but we any hiking we may do will not be at the higher elevations; just around Murren or lower.

What kind of weather should we be expecting in Murren then, or rather what kind of clothing should we bring? For the rest of our trip, we will be wearing a light jacket, like a golf jacket, as well as bring a sweater. How cold could it be at Jungfraujoch in June?
If I don't have to, I'd rather not pack a heavy jacket; we're trying not to pack too many clothes and winter clothing takes up a lot of space.

I was in Wengen this past June and did not bring my puffer coat thinking I would not need it. It was my one packing regret. It was cold in the early mornings in the mountains. Who knows what the weather will be like this June.

I would layer. The base layer would be a warm long sleeve tee. The second layer would be a sweater or fleece for warmth. An ideal option for the warmth layer is a puffy down vest which packs down to almost nothing and provides great warmth when needed. The third layer would be a waterproof jacket. The jacket doesn't have to be heavy, but it should be waterproof. I would also pack a knit hat and gloves. I needed these when I visited the area in August and went to elevation.

When you layer, you have options that are available in many circumstances. Layering is the name of the game here in the Pacific Northwest.

I would not pack a “heavy jacket”.

What you mention should suffice..

For the rest of our trip, we will be wearing a light jacket, like a golf jacket, as well as bring a sweater..

We were there a few years back in June and the weather was perfect.. just as an fyi

Take into account that whatever the high temperature of the day is, it cools off at night. Especially in the mountains, where the weather can change in an instant. So you have to be prepared for cold/wet at any time. The Jungfraujoch is at 10,000 feet altitude. Thats cold anywhere.

If it were me, one outer layer, water resistant hooded jacket. You need that anyway. Fleece or wool sweater. You need that anyway. Heavy shirt. You need that anyway. Base layer, ditto. Pants are the critical thing. Jeans get very cold when wet or windy. Long underwear doubles as sleepwear. If it turns suddenly cold, put on everything you got. No heavy jacket for me. But gloves and a hat, yes

I should also mention that the mountain sun is hot. And I got a good sunburn riding around on the boats in June even though the temperature wasn’t that high.

The sun was out when I was at the Jungfraujoch. So, I was actually warmer up there than when I was walking in Wengen before the sun came out.

As already mentioned, June can be a mix of weather—cold, hot, rain. So, be prepared for anything.

Have a great trip!!

Have a hat and sunscreen for protection. One of the only times I ever got sunburned on the top my head was in new snow on the First Mtn. in early September. I had a full head of hair then! Many lightweight collapsible hat options. I was down to a long-sleeved shirt then after hiking. Have footwear that can handle some snow and mud. A smaller rucksack and a hiking stick/s come in handy.

We were there a bit later, mid-late June. At Murren altitude, no jacket at all during the day, and perhaps a light windbreaker or fleece at night. At Schilthorn (or Jungfraujoch) altitude, however, you will want to have both a fleece and a windbreaker.

The fleece / windbreaker combo allows for more flexibility and less packing room than taking a parka.

I found layering as needed is the way to go.
I have been to that area 4 times since 2017 (2 times in May and 2 times in July) and never have packed a heavy jacket. It was around 39 Fahrenheit on top of the Jungfrau in July. But everyone has a different thermostat.

I was at the Jungfrau in Sept a few years back, and was amused by the folks, used to being warm in the valleys, going up in sundresses and sandals. I then saw them buying parkas in the Jungfrau gift shop. If there's snow on the ground in an area year-round, it doesn't take much to figure out the air temperature.
