What to do in Jungfrau Valley

I'm visiting the Jungfrau Valley July 15th-18th and would like to maximize my time there. I'm an outdoor enthusiast and want to see as much as possible. Is Lauterbrunnen the most centralized town in which to stay? What activities do you recommend?

Some hikes in the area courtesy of forum member “Shoe”. I haven’t done them but they are on the list for my next trip.

My recommendations.

  1. Head up to the Schilthorn on a nice morning.
  2. Paragliding. I did it from Murren. There may be other locations nearby.

Enjoy your time there. It’s a beautiful area.

Great place!!

Lauterbrunnen is a great central location to make a base, and it is easy to get to from Interlaken. It has easily accessible lifts to the high meadows, and a high train that goes to Murren further south up the valley. You can also check out: RS - https://www.ricksteves.com/watch-read-listen/read/articles/swiss-bliss

Googling "Hikes in the Bernese Oberland" will give you a range of guides and websites that discuss the subject. I have not used them so I cannot recommend any one in particular.

Swiss Post Buses also carry passengers, so you can check out how to get places, or get back at the end of a hike.

You will have fun.

We've stayed at Wengen which has quick access up to hiking. You can take the gondola up to Mannlichen and take the relatively flat hike to Kleine Scheidegg among the occasional alpine cows. From there, either take the train up to Jungfrau or take the train back to Wengen (or down to Lauterbrunnen).

Others like to stay in Murren which is on the other side of the valley from Wengen. Both of these towns have spectacular scenery. We enjoy Wengen vs. Lauterbrunnen because of the scenery up above the valley floor. Either way, it's all a fantastic location.

I second the suggestion to stay up in the Alps in Wengen or Murren and not down in the valley. I had an amazing balcony in Murren (Hotel Alpenblick) that looked directly at the peaks of the Eiger etc. - great way to wind down at night, sitting on it and having a cold one.

Lauterbrunnen is an excellent choice as it is beautiful and there are several hotels and restaurants to choose from. Mürren is also a great option with more hotels and restaurants. We stayed at Hotel Silberhorn in Lauterbrunnen and it was our favorite hotel for our entire trip. We also stayed in Gimmelwald. I found it lovely and quaint but my husband became a bit bored as there is limited food options.

In regards to activities, we enjoyed the North Face Trail from Mürren. Though I would classify it as a moderate level hike, the views were stunning. My husband did the Via Ferrara from Mürren to Gimmelwald and he had the best time and loved it. Trummelbach Falls, though not a hike, is a worthwhile activity. Very interesting, especially if you enjoy natural beauty. The Jungfraujoch train was excellent despite the high price tag. You can ride the train to the top and enjoy the breathtaking view and ride back down to some trail heads and hike.

No matter what activity you decide to do, your trip to the Jungfrau region will be unforgettable. Enjoy!!!

Rather than start a new topic, I might hijack this for a moment. We are staying in Lauterbrunnen for 3 nights and I was curious if there are any funiculars in the area? We have the Swiss Travel Pass as well and hope to make a ton of use of it.

Dantbarnes,
There is only the one funicular mentioned, at Almendhubel, but there is a fabulous train up to Wengen where you can catch the gondola to Männlichen. Or you can continue on that train to Kleine Scheidegg. There is also the gondola at Lauterbrunnen that takes you to Grutschalp and the little train along the cliff to Mürren. From Mürren there is a gondola up to Birg and the Schilthorn. Last year that was included in the pass, not sure about this year. Also there is a gondola between Mürren and Stechelberg (two parts, one to Gimmelwald) and our favorite, the dramatic lift at First, but you take the train to Grindelwald to catch that.

Once you are in the area all these connections will make more sense,
