We have scheduled our trip for the end of September. Now we are trying to figure out what is the best plan for flying into Europe and getting to Salzburg and leaving Chamonix at the end. We have considered flying into Prague and out of Zurich or Paris. We will add about 5 days to each end of the MyWay trip. We have also though of using Iceland Air and stopping in Iceland on our way back to MSP. That option limits us to flying into places like Frankfurt or Zurich. We will be traveling by train, so we would like to see some good scenery as we travel. We are open to all suggestions, including Italy, if that is doable.
For our MyWay Alpine tour we decided to fly round trip to Munich. We will visit Dachau and enjoy the old town of Munich before starting the tour, and will take the train from Geneva to Innsbruck for a few days after the tour ends. When my sister and her husband return home, my husband and I will spend a week traveling around Germany.
Thank you for your response. Munich would be ideal, but we are going during Oktoberfest, and I think we might be too late to secure lodging.
Why not a few days Vienna? Beautiful city with something for everybody's taste, and an easy and not too long (less than 3 hrs) train ride to Salzburg.
You might not be too late to get a hotel in Munich. We booked later than this and were able to get a clean and comfortable room near the train station (which is what we wanted). It was more money than we might have liked but we had a great time ( and I dont drink beer!!) So take a look if Munich is where you want to go
Unfortunately you didn't say where you're flying from.
Flying into and out of Prague to the U.S. requires going thru a European gateway city usually as the only direct flight to the U.S. is Delta thru JFK and it's not all year long (seasonal.)
Vienna would be my preferred city to fly into before going to Salzburg--since Munich is going thru Oktoberfest. You can catch a quick and easy train right into Salzburg.
If your tour ends in Chamonix, I'd just spend the remainder of my time in the Alps and fly out of Zurich--a good smaller airport.
Thank you. We have thought about that, too. Our first thought was to fly into Prague, to Vienna, to Salzurg, but the Iceland stop is enticing, also, and their destinations are more limiting.
Home is Minnesota, so MSP or Duluth would be our starting and ending options.
Are you taking the Sept 26 departure date from Salzburg?
I flew into Vienna on Friday morning and spent a long weekend there, then afternoon train to Salzburg. I had been to Salzburg before, so I didn't need any extra time there, having seen the city sights, I used the full day to visit Berchtesgaden (Documentation Center) and the Frielicht (outdoor) Museum in the other direction from Salzburg.
If you haven't been to Paris, that would be my top choice. EasyJet (Orly) and Air France (CDG) fly there from Geneva.
I'd save Iceland for another trip - when the connections are convenient for your next European destinations.
We are on the 9/19 tour.
