We will be joining the late May Rick Steves 12 day Switzerland tour and are trying to figure out the best shoes to bring. From the itinerary, it seems like high top hiking shoes aren't necessary, but have past tour members found low top hiking shoes or regular running/trail shoes the most useful? Thanks!
Welcome to the forum Maureen.
Wear whatever is comfortable and well broken in. Everyone has her favorite brand and style, but what is comfortable for one person is not necessarily comfortable for you. I think it's at good idea taking two pairs of shoes, good walking shoes and sandals. Quality socks are as important as quality shoes.
There are lots of shoe threads if you look at the search function.
My brooks ghost running shoes work well in Switzerland for me. These shoes are fine for trails like the one from männlichen to kleine Scheidegg. Anything more serious than that I would recommend a hiking shoe. I wouldn’t wear sandals. I just bring one pair of shoes—the ones I wear.
I live in the mountains and walk a lot these are the shoes I have:
For everyday use I go for trail running shoes. I usually try to go for shoes that are not to flashy though, as again, these are my everyday shoes. These can handle most of the T1 and T2 trails. (Those that have yellow signs). I also wear those when going on trips etc... They make for great shoes if you are going to be on your feet a lot.
A pair of Teva sandals. On hot summer days that is what I wear, and yes, you can do the easier trails with them without an issue.
A pair of high top hiking boots. Mine are now going on 10 years. These I use when going on more difficult trains (especially if I haven't done them before) and also as general purpose winter shoes.
(I also have a pair of dress shoes that maybe see use 5 days a year...)
I wear Oboz shoes (made in Bozeman, MT) and I love them to pieces. They are hugely supportive, have a higher instep, a wider toe box but a regular size ankle. They are really the most supportive shoes I've owned. I have 2 pairs of the low leather walking shoes (oops, no make that 3 - dark grey, reddish and beige) and one pair of Oboz low hiking shoes.
I'm heading to Scotland in 2 weeks, and debated whether to buy some hiking ankle boots, but I'm not going up anywhere that rugged - mostly low level hiking - so I figured the low hiking shoes were enough. I even debated whether to bring the low hiking shoes (as opposed to just relying on my walking shoes) but ultimately decided I wanted the more rugged, deeper tread. Plus the hiking shoes are waterproof but my walking shoes are only water resistant.
I also bring a pair of slip on cloth shoes for slippers/wear on the plane, etc., and a pair of Toms flats for putting on at the end of the day if I'm walking somewhere close and want to be a bit dressier (or just more comfortable). :)
Hi Maureen. We are on this tour in May. I have been to the Lauterbrunen area twice before and my Brooks walking shoes have been fine and what I’m bringing. Glad you asked this though.
Have a great trip.
