Whenever I take the train between Arth-Goldau and Lugano, it is packed with hikers with backpacks until the train comes out of the Gotthard tunnel and stops at Bellinzona. There they all get off, and the train's practically empty the rest of the way to Lugano. Does anyone know about hikes in that area?
It is a stop on the Trans-Swiss Trail, which goes from the Italian border, over the Alps to the French border.

maybe they are just changing trains, Bellinzona is the junction for Locarno and Lake Maggiore.
Bellinzona itself is a great visit. I did not do much hiking here, mainly a walk around the old town, the threes castles and up to the San Girolamo church. A pleasant area. Hiking is prevalent everywhere but this may be an added reason for this area?
