We will be taking a Danube river cruise at the end of September, ending near Munich. If we were to take a train from Munich to Switzerland, which city in Switzerland do you recommend? It will be our first time in Switzerland. We will spend 2 nights.
Lucerne…..or if possible Lauterbrunnen in the Jungfrau……in Lauterbrunnen you will be nestled into the heart of those gorgeous alps…..and have the view of a lifetime……but in Lucerne you have a beautiful city with things to do and places to eat and a ride up the train to Mt. Pilatus and a delightful boat ride……so many gorgeous places to see
When you say city, do you mean you want to spend time in an actual city or would you like to see the alps?
It doesn’t have to be a “city” per se. we love hiking and beautiful scenery.
With only 2 nights and having to come all the way from Munich I’d probably say Luzern then, as you’ll really only have 1 day. You can do a day hike from there up at Rigi. Take the boat from Luzern to Vitznau, ride up to Rigi and explore from there.
If you could make time for 3-4 nights, then I’d go to the Berner Oberland and stay in Wengen - a car free village up in the alps with easy access to lots of great hiking & scenery.
You might consider Appenzell - with a lovely pedestrian-only area and easy hiking. I'd suggest Trail #990 Appenzell Chapel Trail with 11 chapels. One from the 1620's. Passing through farmland and covered bridges, we enjoyed this easy hike with options to walk back into town. Then fly home from Zurich.
