Wengen, Zermatt and Locarno advice

Hi,

We're traveling to Switzerland this September for 13 days for our honeymoon and I'm finally making progress on our itinerary!

We're arriving in Wengen the morning of Wednesday, September 11 directly from Zurich airport and this will be our home base for 5 nights/6 days to explore all of the area and hike/bike. After this, my husband and I are taking the train to Zermatt for 3 nights to continue our explore/hiking/adventure part of our honeymoon trip. Before we head home, we wanted to also end with some relaxing/lake vibes. I was thinking of leaving Zermatt and taking the train to Locarno for 2-3 nights, but wondering if I should consider Montreux instead? Or Ascona? or Lugano? A bit stuck on this part. We fly out of Zurich on Sunday, September 15 so it's really looking for the extra spot from Thursday - Saturday. Any advice helps!

Also any advice on Zermatt hotels? Looking into these: Hotel Bellerive, Hotel Firefly, Cervo Mountain Resort, Unique hotel post

I’ll just say I like the number of nights in each location. We spent 5 nights in Wengen and wish we had stayed at least one more. Actually, we never wanted to leave! We also stayed 3 night in Zermatt. Was perfect for us.

We liked our stay at the Hotel Butterly in Zermatt.

Thanks Paul! Funny I kept going back and forth if we should do 6 nights. Hmm… now I’m wondering do we extend. Have you been to Locarno or Montreux?

I had dinner in January at the Poestli Stuebli in the Unique Post Hotel. This is definitely the heart of the action in Zermatt on a busy street with lots of restaurants and bars nearby. The Unique Post also has a basement disco if you're up for that.

I've been by the Bellerive, next to the Papperla Pub, a top Apres Ski bar. Don't know what its like in the summer.

Cervo looks like a spot if you want to get away from the madding crowd. Elevator in front of the hotel down to the Suneggabahn underground funicular will take you up to Sunegga for hiking and some unique mountain side restaurants.

It sounds like you have 12 nights. If so, what about 6 nights Wengen, 3 nights Zermatt, 3 Nights Luzern or somewhere on Lake Luzern like Weggis, etc. You can get to the Zurich airport easily from Luzern without having to move again. Or you could stay directly on the water on Lake Thun at Beatus Wellness Resort at the end.

Thanks for all of this info!

I like the idea of 6 nights in Wengen, but feel like we need those 3 nights in Zermatt or else it feels like a lot of jumping around, right? I'm feeling like we'll stick with the five nights in Wengen, 3 nights Zermatt, 2 nights Locarno and spend our last night in Lucerne? Our flight will be 1:30pm the next day (trying to get the later one though at 4pm so we have the day), so we could take a train straight to the airport from there. That may stress me out. Is it easy?

Also, do we need a travel visa if we're from the US and staying less than 90 days?

I feel like we'll be hiked-out by the time we get to Locarno, so I'd like to have this part of the trip be more relaxing and focus on eating and having a drink at the lake. Or maybe even paddleboarding.

Something like this for an itinerary?
Wednesday: Arrive in Wengen > relax and explore Wengen
Thursday: Lauterbrunnen, waterfalls, electric bikes?
Friday: Big hike in Grindelwald or Gimmelwald
Saturday: Head to Interlaken area. Go to lake Brienz and kayak for the day to switch it up?
Sunday: Big hike > Oeschinensee?
Monday: Leave in the morning and head to Zermatt; Have relaxing day in Zermatt exploring main street
Tuesday: Five lakes hike, maybe spa after at the hotel?
Wednesday: Another Hike in Zermatt. Think we'll skip trip up to the top of Europe..
Thursday: Leave Zermatt in morning and head to Locarno
Friday: Locarno > explore, rent bikes and bike to Ascona and explore area. maybe paddle board for sunset?
Saturday: Head to Lucerne if it doesn't feel like too much? Mt Rigi? Stay in hotel in Lucerne
Sunday: Try to get later flight and explore lucerne and Zurich > head home
