Wengen to Zermatt

Our 18 and 22 year olds want to do an overnight on their own to zermatt during our week-long stay in Wengen. (Parents are happy to stay in Wengen ) This is a sort of last minute idea as we will be there this July. One is an avid nature and mountain photographer so is hoping for some good photos weather permitting.
They will have the half fare card and BO Pass. Looks like - from sbb app and the BO pass area of coverage - they can get free travel on train to Brig/Visp and perhaps just pay the final segment to Zermatt. Anyone with recent experience taken a quick trip there with any tips? Hostel suggestions? Thanks.

Yes, the route to Brig is covered if they take the RE 1 from Spiez to Brig. It takes a little longer, but is much more scenic.

I don't know anything about hostels in Zermatt, but they should stay in town if they want scenic photos of the Matterhorn, as early morning might be the best opportunity if the weather is clear. See if they can get up very early and catch it as the sun hits the top of the peak, then every 5 minutes as the sun slowly illuminates the entire mountain.

BTW, they should only do this if the weather report is good for a couple of days.

To Visp/Brig there are two routes: The quickest route is via the Base tunnel. Those trains call at Visp first, then continue to Brig. You would change for Zermatt in Visp. However the BO pass is not valid on those trains. You would need an extra ticket Spiez - Visp.

If you take the RE over old mountain route the pass will cover this. In that case you end up in Brig, and would need a ticket Brig - Zermatt in addion.

In both cases the extra tickets van already be bougth at the station in Wengen, or on line, or using the App.
