So I have the first part of my trip planned thanks to the forums help. What I need now is expert help/advice/suggestions on how to get from Wengen to Salzburg the same day. I know it’s a long day. So my plan is to purchase the Swiss Saver Day pass because the STP only does 4 days when I need 5. I’m just not sure about the journey. Looking for most cost effective and quickest train route. I have been told to take my pass to Buchs and then purchase OBB to Salzburg. I have also been told to use pass to Zurich and then purchase OBB to Salzburg. So I am left a little anxious and confused. Can someone please clarify for me or make another suggestion??? Thank you so much for your expert advice!
Your pass will cover you till the border, and that irrespective of which train you take, as the pass covers all trains in Switzerland. But there are two routes.
The route involving the direct Zurich - Salzburg train (and that is the one I would suggest you take) crosses in to Austria at Buchs, so you would need to add a ticket Buchs - Salzburg. (But you can stay on the train, no problem).
The other route goes via Munich, and in that case the border is st. Margrethen.
But also look at just booking Lauterbrunnen - Salzburg on www.oebb.at
They often have deeply discounted fares, and that may be even cheaper than the Day Pass + ticket combo.
What travel dates? And what is your full itinerary. That could make a difference in pass suggestions.
Thank you WengenK. I will look into that for sure.
Wanderweg, I am traveling on 9/15. I will have the 4 day STP for the 4 days prior. Unfortunately they don’t offer a 5 day. Flex doesn’t work for me either. I welcome any other suggestions. Thanks!
There is a construction project between Buchs and Feldkirk, Austria currently and it looks like it will last through the summer. The few direct trains between Zurich and Salzburg are being rerouted via St Gallen and Dombin to Feldkirk, so that adds about an hour to the trip. There are also trains via Buchs, but have a replacement bus between Buchs and Feldkirk, plus an additional train change at Sargans. So some routes will be shown through Munich in about with the same travel time and a train change in Munich.
If you are going through Austria, you can buy the whole ticket from www.oebb.at/en. If you are getting a Saver Day Pass, you can add that in at the OEBB site. It is at the bottom of a very long list in the discount drop down menu as "SBB- General Abo (1 or 2) Klasse" depending if you are looking for a 1st or 2nd class ticket.
Thank you for the information Sam! I checked it out and found the discount code just as you said. The route however doesn’t specify the construction changes as you described so maybe my date is after the summer construction hopefully 🤞.
