My husband and I will be spending the last week in September in Switzerland .
We are arriving on September 27 in Zurich and are planning to take the train from
Zurich to Luzern and spend 1 night there.
From there we would like to travel to the Berner Oberland where we plan to base ourselves in Wengen 3 or 4 nights .
From Wengen we would like to take a train to Milan where we will pick up a car.
We are wondering which would be the best options and what trains should we take and from where ?
Also because we are going into Italy what train pass should we get. ?
Thanks !
The only train passes to consider are the Swiss Travel Passes or Swiss Half Fare Card, nothing for Italy. With either of those, you will buy a separate ticket (at a Swiss train station) for the Italian portion of the trip (about $20). The side trips that you plan to make around both Luzern and Wengen are also part of the equation and can be either discounted or covered, depending on destination and type of pass or card.
One of the cheaper passes is the version for 4 consecutive days ($277), but it sounds like you need to spread travel over a longer period, possibly with a flexi pass (3 days + half-fare combo about $330) or with 8 consecutive days ($448). At the least, a Half-Fare Card ($133) will certainly save money over paying full price as you go.
