Wengen or Murren in May 2026

As usual, the folks on this forum are so incredibly helpful! Thank you all in advance. This forum helped us plan our trip a few years ago so I’m relying on it again for this next one.

We will be in the BO area early May for at least three nights. Last time we stayed in Murren and we LOVED the town. Stunning!! It was late June.
This time we are traveling in early May so the weather may be quite different. We are trying to decide which town to stay in.
We want to hike if possible. We don’t need crazy hard climbs but we are active and fit so a good climb is fine. We also like to bike so a good e-bike ride or tour would be lovely if weather permits.
We went to top of Jungfrau last time and even walked up from there to the little restaurant up the mountain. That was a highlight!!!
I guess I’m concerned if the weather is bad we may want to be in a larger town like Wengen but wondering if we will regret not going back to Murren.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Cissy,
We've had the wonderful privilege of staying in both Wengen and Murren. Wengen in June of 2024 on the RS Alpine My Way tour and then in Murren during the same tour in June of 2025. They are not too terribly difficult to reach from the other. We loved Wengen so much that we wanted to be sure and visit during our stay in Murren. Not difficult, especially since we were going to be in the LV anyway. We stayed in Hotel Regina whilst in Wengen. Magnificent view! Loved our Hotel Jungfrau during our time in Murren.
They're equally wonderful, in my opinion :)

Wengen has a lot of hikes and offers quicker access than Murren does to reach Lauterbrunnen where the trains leave for Grindelwald and Interlaaken. .That said, during May a lot of the trails at higher elevations may still have snow and mud. The trails around Wengen, Kleine Scheidegg and Mannlichen may be more trekkable.

It takes no time at all to reach Murren from LV (and vice versa) now that the newest zippity zip cable car lift was recently completed. But, yes, it is on the opposite side of the valley from the train station but a local bus can make it speedy. We actually like the walk, though.

Unless they have a very sparse snow year, it doesn’t look like the trail from Männlichen-Kleine Scheidegg will be open the first of May. I remember a number of trails right around Wengen and the Information office in the center of town was very helpful with a great map they gave out.
