I am inquiring about hiking trails in and around Wengen. It was my luck to break my ankle in late April. Even though I am walking now with both shoes on my feet, I still am needing to adjust what kind of hiking I do when we are in the Alps. I have treking poles and hiking boots so I am prepared to do some hiking but the level of difficulty on trails needs to be considered. Any suggestions for some trails that are gentle climbs and easy to walk on. Or am i asking to much of the Alps area? I am sure I can get suggestions when in Wengen but would like some input from the forum. You all have been so helpful to me as I prepared for this trip. Thanks...
In Rick's Switzerland guidebook you will find the Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg hike. It is mostly level-to-slightly-downhill and a good trail for your situation yet has fabulous views. It is one of our favorites. Also, walking in the valley is easy, Stechelberg to Lauterbrunnen, and perhaps even Grutschalp to Mürren will suit you. A little more undulating but quite easy. It is also in Rick's book.
The prior poster gave good advice. Another option from Wengen that should work for you is to go up to Mannlichen on the lift then take the gondola to Grindelwald (located about 3 minutes from the top of the Mannlichen lift), walk through town (a bit hilly), head up to First via the lift, then hike about 50 minutes to Lake Bachalpsee. The hike isn’t perfectly flat, but it is a wide and well maintained trail and quite lovely.
I happen to enjoy Interlachen and there is good, mostly flat hiking in town and around the lakes that is a nice alternative to the mountain trails. Combine that with a boat ride.
Other trails that you won't find to be too hard are First to Grosse Scheidegg, Grutschalp to Winteregg to Murren, and Lauterbrunnen to Trummelbach falls. If you click on my name you'll find a link to our dozen favorite trails in the area, including those, and you'll see what the trails look like.
