Wengen

We are thinking of making Wengen our home base for a week and not rent a car but use public transportation. We will fly into Zurich and leave on a river cruise out of Basel. Without a car will we miss out on top tourist things we should see?

No. A lot of the attractions in the Berner Oberland (like Wengen) aren't even accessible by car. Switzerland has the best public transportation network in the world that will get you anywhere you want to go with frequent service.
The Swiss Rail site will give you all of your options:

My husband and I have just done the reverse trip but staying in Lauterbrunnen, down the mountainside form Wengen. We spent 10 days in Lauterbrunnen, bought a Swis Pass and used only public transport. It was ery easy to use and got us everywhere. We had a great time. Check out the Swiss rail web site mentioned above and plug in some trips to get an idea of what you can do. The best part is that everyone can look at the scenery, someone else is watching the road for you.

Having just come back from that area (staying in Muerren), I would say the opposite: A car will just get in the way, as it will stay parked. The top tourist things to see involve walking and taking lifts, in areas where cars are not allowed (like Wengen and Muerren) or couldn't possibly go (like the Schilthorn, Birg, and the Jungfraujoch).

Hi Debbie,

Just wanted to agree with all the others. A car is totally useless asthe best sights are not even accessible by car. Just wanted to sat we absolutely loved our 4 nights in Wengen and wished we could have stayed longer. As close to Heaven as one can get in our opinion.

Debbie,

Agree with all of the other posters that you absolutely can do without a car! Lucky you to have an entire week there! We've been to that area 3 times. First time stayed in Lauterbrunnen at the Staubbach, 2nd time stayed in Murren at the Eiger Guesthouse, 3rd time split our time between Wengen at the Baren Hotel and the Staubbach in Lauterbrunnen. You really can't go wrong, but all 3 do have a slightly different "feel". We enjoyed all three locations and would highly recommend all three of these hotels. If I had a week in the area I would personally split it. I LOVE Wengen, but a week there might be a bit much for me. Just thought I'd give you my 2 cents:)
