We plan to spend 2 or 3 days in the area. The hotels looked nicer in Weggis and Vitznau. Any thoughts / opinions on whether to stay in either Weggis, Vitznau or Lucerne (near Old Town)?
The good / the bad?
Thanks!

All three are beautiful , but Weggis and Vitznau are small , sleepy places , and by lake steamer to Luzern is about an hour to an hour and a half . Staying in Luzern would be a better choice , with Vitznau as a day trip ( if time warrants ) .
Depends on what you want to see. Maybe a daytrip to Lucern is all you want. Weggis is exceptionally beautiful and yes, it's definitely a sleepy little lakefront village - but that's OK if that's what you want. Just know what you're getting before you decide.
Was just there in September. We stayed in Lucerne and day triped to both Weggis and Vitznau. How will you be traveling? If you are using the trains keep in mind that you need to factor in a hour to hour and half to get to the station via the ferry. And WOW those lake ferries were on point. each dock we stopped at was dead on the minute to arriving and departing (Swiss Punctuality). We had the schedule and looked at our watches for each stop.
If you are traveling by car and will drive from say Weggis to your next destination then stay there.
Lucerne is beautiful in and of itself and has much to offer. I stayed for 5 nights last September and day tripped to Mount Rigi via Weggis and Vitznau. Cruising to Rigi offers beautiful scenery. My vote is Lucerne.
Considering the trip from Luzern to Vitznau and up the mountain on the Vitznau Rigi Bahn . watch this wonderful travelogue from 1978 - " Changing Trains " here ( in four fifteen minute parts ) https://youtu.be/hlZaicAXnFA
