weekend travel from Geneva

Hello
My grandaughter is studying in Geneva in June and I will visit for her birthday. She will have 3 days (Friday - Sunday) off for me to take her from Geneva. Do you have thoughts on a wonderful weekend trip from Geneva? From other forums I see Grindelwald or Chamonix. I'd love some ideas! Thank you

If she likes hiking and nature and less activity, I would suggest the Berner Oberland area, but would recommend, Murren, Wengen or Lauterbrunnen, which I feel are less touristy than Grindelwald.

If she would like a little more activity and would enjoy a bigger town, I'd suggest Luzern/Lucerne. IMO, it is one of the most beautiful towns in Europe. From Luzern, you'd have a variety of possible day trips. Bern, is charming, or you could take a boat ride and a cog wheel train to the top of Mt. Rigi.

There is a direct bus from Geneva airport to Chamonix that takes about 2 hours and cost $15.

For other destinations check out the sbb.ch website for travel times/costs between destinations.

Murten is only about 2 hours away from Geneva and is a lovely frequently overlooked historic small city.

Grindelwald is about 4 hours away. Zermatt is also 3-4 hours away.

Have fun.

Re., the suggestion to go to Paris. I took my daughters on a month long trip to Europe when they were 20. They pretty much loved everywhere we went. However, one of them especially loved Paris, as I would imagine many that age would. I think you have many options, and if I were you, I'd work with your granddaughter to determine what she is interested in. The Olympics is in Paris this summer, and I would gather thoughts on whether folks think June will be extra busy as the Olympics ramps up.

Another consideration, she might be able to take weekend trips while she is in Geneva. In that case, it might be that she could cover the closer places like Chamonix, Berner Oberland, Luzern, etc. on her own.

Thank you so much for all the replies. We know and love Paris and she will there for a semester next spring AND visiting a fellow student studying there at the end of June. I will investigate all other suggestions - again, all is so appreciated!
