Weather in Lucerne in August? Do we need a jacket?

Hi, we will be in Lucerne and then Gimmelwald in the middle of August and I am curious about the weather there. Will it ever get cool enough to bring a jacket? If I don't bring a jacket is a hooded sweatshirt ok to wear around or would I be looked at like a bum lol? (I live in the PNW where all we were are hoodies, but know that it isn't like that in other places) I am only bringing a carry on sized bag and a backpack so space is limited.

Thanks!

General rule... most of Europe is rather warm in August, but the Alps are a wild-card. Although I've never seen it snow there in August, I have seen snow fall in late July and early September. But it could just as easily be uncomfortably warm, at least during the day.

Solution? Check the forecast immediately before leaving, and in the mountains, worry about functionality, not style.

We were in Switzerland last summer for 3 weeks and the temps ranged from the 80s down into the 50s, sometime on the same day! The higher up in the mountains you go the more changeable the weather becomes. Dress in layers and be prepared for anything, even rain. Thunderstorms roll through the mountains and the downpours are fantastic!

Even if it is warm, it can always rain. No matter where you are in the world, you should have a jacket with you. Even the desert can get cold or wet at night.
