We will be traveling from Italy to Germany (Munich) in February and want to stay 1 or 2 nights in Switzerland without having to take too many different trains. Where would you recommend we stop/stay? And we are hoping to avoid extreme cold as we are traveling light. Looking at Lucerne, but want to see/do the most possible on a low budget.

You find extreme cold high in the mountains. Otherwise, cities like Luzern have a similar climate to Munich. Neither will be sunny and warm, but tolerable temperature-wise without a parka.
