Hi I am a 65 year old single traveler, traveling to Appenzell and Pontresina next summer. Love B&B and small inns...any suggestions for where to stay? Many thanks !
Appenzell recommendation: Adler Hotel (recommended in RS Switzerland book). Right in the center of town; very hands-on family run hotel. We stayed there for 3 nights in August. Although it is classified as a "hotel" it has the feel of a B & B. And breakfast is included. We asked for a room in the historical part of the hotel because of the view. It is noisier than the newer rooms, but I loved looking out over the distant hills from our window.
We, too, stayed at the popular Adler Hotel. Wonderful breakfast included. Agree - try to get one of the rooms in the historic part of the hotel.
Pontresina is a ski/summer resort, and there are not many small inns. Hotel Garni Chesa Mulin is fairly small and highly recommended in reviews; I looked at staying there when we were considering an overnight before the Bernina Express route. So if you would like a place in the town, take a look.
Or consider one of the numerous mountain inns (or Berghaus) up on the mountain or outside of the town itself, such as Gasthaus Berninahaus, which has its own train stop. Or Hotel Muottas Muragl, at the top of a lift and the start of numerous popular and scenic hikes.

Or Gasthaus Haus Spinas in Val Bever, again with its own train stop outside of town (or you can arrive by horse-drawn carriage):

Most of the hotels and inns in the Engadine offer a free transport card with a minimum stay of 2 nights, so you should be able to get around pretty easily.
We loved our stay at Hotel Appenzell. It’s charming, family-owned and has a good restaurant. Don’t forget to sample the local cheese as well.
