Visiting Jungfraujoch

My husband and I will be in Murren From June 24 to June 27.
Our plans include visiting Jungfraujoch on June 25. I am about to purchase tickets online; however, I am wondering about the weather.
If the weather isn't good, can I get a refund?
Can I book the day before instead to ensure good weather?
Would seats became unavailable if I wait?

We are also planing on visiting the The Schilthorn on June 24.
Thank you,

Please advice

Clara

It is probably not a good idea to buy tickets in advance. You want to make sure the weather is good when get up in the morning and take the first train up in the morning.

What kind of pass are you getting for this trip, if any?
Are you trying to recreate the RS Best of Switzerland tour on your own?

I would not purchase tickets until you are sure if the weather: usually that’s the morning you want to go. There are no refunds. You can check webcams to see what the weather looks like at the top.

With only 3 days, you’re going to have to be flexible. Chose which one (Schilthorn or Jungfrau) to go to based on weather. Have a plan B. I assume you’ve researched some of the other options. Have those at the ready, just in case. You’ll probably want a rail pass of some kind.

The thing about mountains (either, in this case) is that the weather can change very quickly up high, and be totally different from morning to afternoon. Or sunny on top while cloudy down lower, or vice versa. So even weather forecasts a day in advance are hard to trust. No guarantees. You can get up the Schilthorn pretty quickly from Mürren first thing in the morning. Jungfraujoch will take a couple of hours to get to. Your hotel may be monitoring the webcams from both, so ask them for guidance when you arrive

Don't book tickets for mountain excursions in advance. You anyway do not need to buy tickets in advance, as they are always available.
What is sometimes advisable is however to get a reservation, so to make sure that you will be able to get on the departure you intended to take. The way this works is that at Kleine Scheidegg first those with reservations board, and then those without. Until the train is full. So a reservation gives you a guaranteed place on a train. You still pick seats yourself.
(Note that most of the trip is in a tunnel, and have seen people fight for window seats...)

You can however safely do that the day before, if the weather forecast checks out. You can do that at the station, for example the BLM station in Murren should certainly be able to do that (but their opening hours are a bit limited) but any other manned ticket counter should be able to.

We kept checking the weather every day and finally were able to go to Jungfraujoch on the fifth day. Take a warm jacket to wear up there. We saw Indian women in their saris there who were freezing.

Another warning about Jungfraujoch is that it's one of the few places in Europe that you can reach without having to do serious climbing where there is a real risk of altitude sickness. If you start feeling ill go back down asap.
