Visiting Geneva during February

I am eyeing up a cheap flight from Buffalo to Geneva for the week of Feb. 17th.

Any advice for visiting there in February? Will it be too expensive to spend the week there?

Thanks in advance!

The best advice for visiting Geneva is to hop on the train and go somewhere more interesting. Geneva is not one of those Swiss tourist destinations. But the trains will take you anywhere you want to go.

Switzerland is never cheap, but a bigger problem is February. That's ski season, but if you're not skiing, or doing other winter activities, you may not find so much else to do.

Near Geneva, there are the towns/cities of Lausanne, Vevey, and Montreux. See if these have enough attractions for you. For me, while Lausanne had a few good museums, I'd struggle to fill a week there in the winter. Many people like the Chateau de Chilllon, but alas I did not; even if I did, it's a half day at most. And I visited Audrey Hepburn's grave in Tolochenaz, but that's obviously a special interest.

If you are into this, however, there are lots of famous people buried in this area, from Charlie Chaplin to Coco Chanel to Richard Burton to James Mason; you can make quite a trip of visits to burial sites. People visit Pere Lachaise in Paris and Highgate Cemetery in London - why not do this in Switzerland? If you're interested, here's a list; Geneva is in Canton Geneva, and Lausanne, Vevey, and Montreux are in Canton Vaud: https://www.dicconbewes.com/2010/09/15/dead-famous-in-switzerland/

I was in Geneva with my college aged daughters mid January. I did think it was really expensive, especially in comparison to other areas of Switzerland that I had thought were expensive. We were only in Geneva to visit CERN which is wonderful if you happen to be a physics person. We visited Chateau Chillon on the way to Geneva. We enjoyed that stop and it did look like places like Vevey and Lausanne might be interesting places to visit. Switzerland is very small. Just because you are flying into Geneva, doesn't mean you have to stay there. You might look at staying in/or visiting the Berner Oberland area (Airbnb's can be a good value here) or Luzern. From those places you might consider day trips to Bern or Basel.

Geneva is never cheap! That week is still ski season, so plenty of people will be heading there as it’s a school holiday week for many parts of Europe.

And Bern is very close to Geneva. It’s a beautiful city (capital) and really worth a visit. You should definitely try to see the Berner Oberland - Lauterbrunnen Wengen Murren Grindelwald. Do get out of Geneva. The only reason I visit Geneva is because my daughter and son-in-law live there.
