Visiting Berner Oberland. Fly to Geneva, Zurich, or somewhere else?

We are planning to spend a week in Mürren, and thought it would be nice to spend a couple of nights getting over jet lag before going to Mürren. We have already stayed in Lucerne and Engelberg, and wish to try a new city.

Originally (2020 cancelled trip) we’d planned to spend time in Vevey or Lausanne or Montreux before Mürren because we would be arriving from France. This time, we are thinking Switzerland will be first, and then we will head to France (Strasbourg and Colmar) before heading home. We don’t wish to get snarled in any post Olympics congestion, so we might not even fly home from Paris. Or, maybe that’s not a concern and it would be cool to be in Paris for a short time post Olympics?

So…seeking
*ideas for a couple nights in Switzerland before going to Mürren? (Geneva, Zurich, Montreux, Basel…?)
*ideas for stops along route from Mürren to Colmar
*ideas for airport to fly home, preferably direct to Detroit

We would like to fly open jaw, plan to use trains and boats, and are seeking suggestions from you expert travelers! :-)

Thank you!

Time of year?

Suggest you look at Delta through Amsterdam to either Geneva, Basel, or Zurich. All have good flight and connection times and about the same price. Fly home on Delta nonstop from Frankfurt.

If you like Vevey or Montreux, fly into Geneva. For Bern, Basel or Zurich. For Luzern, Zurich.

Muerren to Colmar you will pass through, and likely change trains in Bern and Basel.

We liked Zürich better than Geneva, but Lausanne and Vevey better than either of the larger cities. Perhaps Basel on the way to Colmar?

Just thinking of train routes, I think it would make perfect sense to do Lausaunne/Vevey/Montreux first (via Geneva), then Murren, then head north to Colmar.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I like the Amsterdam idea to avoid CDG, although last time I planned a one stop trip, the layover was 55 minutes…seemed tight.

Sam, we hope to travel in September.

Thanks!

Zurich is closer to Mürren than Geneva and you need five nights for the Lauterbrunnen Valley. How many nights do you plan on being in Switzerland?
