I have not been to either town, and I'm wondering which might be the nicer home base for a 3-day visit in the region. Can anyone who has been to or stayed in either place give me some guidance?
I plan to bike a lot, walk in the vineyards, spend time in Lausanne & Montreux, and take a boat ride on the Lake.
Rail travel is my transportation mode.
Thanks in advance.
We stayed for 5 nights a few towns over in Epesses last August (between Lutry and Vevey). Vevey is a larger town where as Lutry is what I would call a village. We enjoyed Vevey. We didn't have a car so took the train, bus and ferry or walked everywhere. In Vevey we went to the farmers market one morning, had a fancy lunch and visited the Alimentarium (which was cool) then went up to Les Pléiades for hiking. We did go to Castle Chillion one morning, we didn't care for Montreux in comparison to other towns/villages on the lake, but lots of choices for restaurants, shopping. We didn't make it up to Rochers de Naye (ran out of time) but would've been easier (quicker) from Vevey.
We loved staying in Epesses though, walking through the vineyards, the ferries and trains were easy to manage, Cully, Rivaz and Lutry were very picturesque, quiet. We did take 1 taxi, had a lovely long dinner one night and too far to walk in the dark and no bus or good train options.
Either place would be great for a base, just depends on what you want to do/looking for. Enjoy
I'm also a hiker, and it looks like Vevey is closer to more hiking trails than Lutry is (although Lutry is right in the vineyard trail). Is this correct?
@Berries: thank you for your insight.
Where did you stay in Epesses?
We stayed in an AirBnB apartment in Epesses.
