Vernazza to Lausanne

My husband and I will be traveling from Vernazza Italy to Lausanne Switzerland 10/21/18. Can you provide advice on best way to travel? We will fly into Milan 10/16 and plan to travel by train to Vernazza 10/18.
I've been studying Rick's travel guides for Italy and Switzerland but I am still unsure of best travel options. Also it seems the Swiss Rail pass would be best for our planned travel from Lausanne 10/21 to Gimmelwald and from Gimmelwald 10/24 to Bern then on to Zurich 10/26. Or would a two country pass be best?

Thanks for any help on this.

Don't get a railpass for Italy, point to point tickets will be cheaper. You can buy advance tickets now for Vernazza to Lausanne at http://www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en. Depending on the time of day, from 197 EUR for 2 or as low as 165 EUR if you don't mid arriving in Lausanne after 10 pm.

Whether you need a Swiss Travel Pass or a Half Fare Card will depend how much travel you have planned. For just Lausanne to Gimmelwald to Bern to Zurich, I doubt if you have enough to make it pay. You need more than 240 CHF per person of train tickets to make it pay. Include any extra transport like cable car rides, train excursions, public transportation in cities like Lausanne or Bern.

jj,

The easiest trip on that route (and the one I'd probably use) is a departure from Vernazza at 07:25, arriving Lausanne at 15:10 (time 7H:45M, 3 changes in Levanto, Milan and Brig). It's a bit of an early start but provides one of the shortest travel times, number of changes and a fairly early arrival time.

Where is your hotel in Lausanne located? The city is on the side of a hill, so you may have an uphill walk so with luggage and I'd suggest a Taxi from the station. Once you get settled, you can obtain a pass to use the "Metro" (Funicular) which will make getting back and forth much easier, especially getting down to Ouchy (the waterfront area).
