Has anyone heard of or visited a town called Vernamiege? I saw a photo of it on Google+ and it was a gorgeously beautiful place. I looked it up and it looked like it is in southern Switzerland and rather remote. Just wondered if anyone had been there and if it is a place to include on an itinerary.
I know this area very well but haven't been to this specific town. It's not particularly remote but sits above Sion, which is one of my favorite towns in Switzerland. Based on where it is sitting, you'll have great views across the valley to the backside of Les Diablerets and the peaks around the Sanetsch Glacier. The neighboring villages of Nendaz and Veyssonaz are big ski areas and the largest mountain in this part of Switzerland, Mont Fort, is just a couple of valleys over. It's about 40 minutes or so southwest of Zermatt.
There is quite a bit to see and do in this area and it isn't uber-touristy either. Any tourists you see will be European. That's part of the reason I like it there! Let me know if you want more information and I can give you ideas for what to see and do in the area based on what you are interested in. The area is worth a visit!
I've passed through it a few times when on holidays in the area, but I've never stayed in the village. Yes it is a very nice part of Switzerland attracting mainly Swiss tourists together with those from the neighbouring countries. If you are seeking to experience the real Switzerland as opposed to tourist Switzerland then I would be a good choice. I'd expect you should be able to get half or even full board for under 100 per night, so the prices are right.
Language night be a challenge in some cases as it is not a really touristy area. Yes, websites and even menus may be in English, but ofter on the ground you may find English limiting.
Thanks for your replies. I would be interested in more information concerning this area. I think it would be a nice area to visit, at least for a few days.
