Just a heads up--you will be charged the 100/month+ fee charge PLUS whatever your original US plan charges are for the month that you use it. Kind of defeats the purpose of getting this plan IMO.
I have the Verizon international plan in which I pay either $5 for data or calls made/received in Canada or Mexico within a 24 hour period beginning from when I first turn on the data or $10 for a 24 hour period for most European countries. I have it for emergencies only.
FWIW, that is how the AT&T international plan works as well - it's considered an add on feature.
hilde, I agree. That’s why I switched to T-Mobile early this year. I now have a free international plan that is so much easier to use and gets me more than Verizon ever did. Plus my plan itself is cheaper.
Yup, I have Verizon and I pay the $100 (my trips are longer than 10 days) plus my regular monthly fee. The service works great and I use data all day long with my maps app. The cost is factored into my travel budget. I don’t mind paying for convenience and ease of use.
My Verizon plan gives me credit for one international day every month. They accumulate, so after six months, I have six days of free-roaming.
(That said, I keep a European SIM active for traveling within the EU.)
I've used Verizon's $10/day plan for several trips. Although I tried to budget phone time by using WiFi as much as I could, I found I'm using data more than $100's worth. My trips are more than 20 days. I'm changing to the $100/month plan to save money. I still have my US plan charges; the international plan is in addition to. I never thought of it as otherwise.
The Verizon international plans are an addition to your regular monthly plan which is communicated on their website. I’ve used both the $10 a day plan and the $100 a month plan. Since my international travel always exceed 10 days the monthly plan was best especially since it also included phone calls. However, I’ve now found an eSim plan that provides everything that I need including phone calls thus I will no longer need either of the aforementioned.
Scudder, so glad you mentioned this. After some research I discoverd my Verizon plan has an optional $10/month "Perk" of 3 international calling days, which accrue up to 36 days in a year. As I understand it once I activate it I have 3 days that month, which is probably all i need on a two-week trip as I mostly use the hotel wifi.
The Verizon web site is not the most user friendly, and the people in their stores rarely know anything other than how to sell you something else. However, Verizon has a dedicated line for international questions and the people at that number have always supplied us with accurate information. Perhaps they can offer some clarification about opitional plans that are less costly. The number is (or was) 1-800-711-8300. If that number isn't valid, then check the web site for an updated one.
Their service worked well in Austria and Germany, note that after a certain number of MB of data each day they start to throttle you (and it is abrupt and noticeable).
But you have to pay someone, somehow, to use your phone. The plan caps roaming charges.
I've added a Verizon International Plan ($100 for 30 days) for our upcoming trip to New Zealand. I understand I can call and text back home and receive calls and texts from home during those 30 days, However, can anyone tell me if the plan allows for local calling in New Zealand without any additional costs? Thanks.
mtbaerden, I believe you get 250 minutes of talk, which includes both calls to the US and calls within the country. But you might want to confirm that with Verizon just to be safe. Someone upthread posted a phone number to call with questions.
